Double Negative offers a reflexive take on the rather spurious effect of 'video negative'. The piece was made by re-videoing the live output from the camera as it was displayed on a monitor, creating feedback. In using the negative video effect, a flicker of alternating positive and negative imagery is produced and various fluctuating microtonal elements in the picture plane are revealed.

A second frame is added to the picture of portrait of a young woman in such a way that the vertical colored patterns can move in a tight formation, precisely and synchronously, there is no space between them. What is then consummated in harmony with an acoustic guitar is a kind of Doctrine of Affects for the female body, conveyed by means of colors and their vitally switching values to create an organic form. At some point red suddenly breaks out of the grid, threatening to overpower everything else. Remaining the same and changing at the same time. (Marc Ries)

Both fundamental values of the source image in SLANT, two red stripes and a bright white foundation which supports them, expose only themselves for some time, accompanied by impassioned polyphonic singing. The steles change slowly, the field opens up, the planes of color shift imperceptibly and re-divide, forming different combinations that then, without interruptions or cuts, break up and enter into new figurations. When he finds the phone he carries on the text flirting, thinking it is a guy that is interested in him. With so much confusion, could everything work out in the end?

The film Brilliant City was produced during a stay in Shanghai with the British Council’s Artist Link Program. The title refers to the name of the location, a residential complex comprised of 25 high-rises in the northern part of Shanghai. It is entirely shot from the 34th floor of one of the buildings and stages a peeping tom view of the surrounding city, capturing everyday activities that can be observed from this vantage point – training soldiers, building activity, traffic, gardening.
