It grew out of an unusual process of interchange between the painter Jean Detheux and the composer Jean Derome. The result is a rare meeting of images and music. What we get is an intense meditation on a world in constant renewal, where every form that emerges is immediately engulfed by the next one. It constitutes a sort of diptych with the film Rupture, which follows. A film without words.

The text for this video is based on a mix of personal experience and local lore. I relate my negative childhood feelings about communes to my experience at the Rainbow Gathering. This led to my short lived interest in capitalist aesthetics and media. I began to read "The Futurist Manifesto", books by Ayn Rand, and "Dianetics". I also became involved with online dating through the "Village Voice" personals. I’d spend $25 for the opportunity to send around 10 messages or 20 winks. I went on a few dates, but nothing long term came of it. I became depressed and imagined a stand-in to introduce myself and tell amusing anecdotes, like I often found myself trying to do while on dates. This video was the imagined component for a signage style installation in a corporate lobby, as if I were the founder of the company.

Surda Checkpoint

The road between between Surda and Ramallah is used by over 60,000 residents of 35 villages as well as by thousands who commute between Ramallah and Birzeit University in the West Bank.It is here that one of the early checkpoints was set up by the Israeli army in March 2001.The film observes various stages in the life of this checkpoint, its growth from a mound of earth placed across the road to a series of cement barriers that have to be squeezed through, to its removal in July 2003. Using only observational footage and very few captions, Surda Checkpoint allows us to take in to daily experience of what it means to have one’s life disrupted, one’s path obstructed, one’s schedule delayed by hours of waiting.

The video is not edited, respecting the actual duration of the performance. In this particular case, the psychic is looking at the past of the De Appel building, which used to accommodate the Jewish bank Lippmann, Rosenthal & Co.

"Oulad l'Viêt Nam" is a series of portraits, made between Casablanca and Sidi Yahia: men and women with extraordinary destinies in their very ordinary lives, speaking in Moroccan, Vietnamese or French.
