John Schofield Live In 3 Ways

John Schofield Live In 3 Ways

2005 • 55 min
Arguably the best of the bunch is John Scofield's Live 3 Ways, which finds the guitarist in three different contexts: a trio with Don Pullen on organ and Marvin "Smitty Smith on drums; a duo with pianist Dr. John; and his touring quartet of the time, featuring saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist Anthony Cox and drummer John Reilly. The only shame about the DVD is that it is so short — at only 50 minutes, with 13 given to the trio, 9 to the duo and the remaining 28 to the quartet. Still, with performances this strong we should be thankful for what we get.

Players, or Oleg Will Come Out Now

2005 • 52 min • Russia
Oleg Menshikov is one of the most unsolved actors in both cinema and theater. A trail of rumors and opinions accompanies each of his new work. There are many more people who have heard about his theatrical works than those who were lucky enough to see them. Some people adore him and others do not forgive the slightest mistakes. Pyotr Shepotinnik was lucky enough to be admitted to the creative laboratory of actor and director Menshikov and freely observe how film roles and stage productions are created — the performances of Griboyedov's "Woe from Wit" and Gogol's "Players", which had a noisy fame.

Odds and Ends

2005 • 4 min
'Odds and Ends' invades the space of a shopping center – big, loud, pink. It is a meditation on consumerism and a narrative about individuals caught up in a process that mostly exceeds their will and control. Sometimes shot from above, there are a series of memorable images piled one after the other in a sequence that is joyful and critically distanced at the same time.

theEYE: Liliane Lijn

2005 • 26 min
Science and Surrealism, ancient myths, Buddhism and feminism are among the frameworks of ideas important to Liliane Lijn’s art. In Paris at the end of the 1950s, in Greece and New York, and in England since 1966, she has worked with light, energy and movement, with archetypal shapes and unconventional materials to produce an art that is clear, complex and strikingly beautiful. Many of Liliane Lijn’s key drawings and sculptures are featured in this profile, which was filmed alongside an important reassessment of her work at the Mead Gallery. The Poem Machines and Koans of the 1960s and 1970s are considered as well as the ambitious “goddess” figures of more recent years.

theEYE: Ian Hamilton Finlay

2005 • 26 min
From previously barren moorland in the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh, Ian Hamilton Finlay has created a unique garden as an encompassing work of art. Little Sparta is a magical combination of culture and horticulture, poetry and planting, philosophy and myth. Ian Hamilton Finlay began his work at Little Sparta in the mid-1960s. With friends and collaborators, around a group of old farm buildings he has fashioned landscapes, streams, bridges, glades, lanes, bowers and more. Everywhere there are inscriptions and sculptures reflecting the artist’s preoccupations: the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, pre-Socratic philosophy, garden history, World War Two, the sea and fishing fleets, time and mortality.
The Life and Times of El Nino

The Life and Times of El Nino

2005 • 59 min • United Kingdom
It has been linked to famines, epidemics, even the fall of empires. This program follows El Niño’s deadly path through human history and the progress science has made in understanding the once-mysterious phenomenon. The effects of El Niño are presented in detail, including an 1878 outbreak of yellow fever in Tennessee, a concurrent drought that ravaged much of China, and more recent calamities that have brought the true nature of this climatic occurrence to light. Focusing on high-tech advances in meteorology, the video outlines El Niño’s significance in the global warming debate and illustrates the use of computer models that can predict its next appearance.
