2005 Cuban experimental short

Sketch Film #2 (Tomonari Nishikawa, 2005, 3 min., super 8, silent, 18/24fps, b&w, USA) The second film in the series, showing my study especially in apparent shapes – a shape that cannot be seen in a single frame but only through a series of consecutive frames when projected. It was edited in camera and hand-processed afterwards.

Bareback collects the collaborations between Tindersticks and filmmaker Martin Wallace into a definitive mini-anthology of their music videos. Working and growing together since 1993, their collaborations have produced unobtrusive yet elegant images that complement songs from across the band's discography. The DVD is a trim package with only nine videos in roughly 40 minutes, yet it excels as a document of thoughtful visual poetry, an evolving symbiotic relationship, and a convenient condensation of the group's achievements over the past decade [upon release]. In other words, Bareback can be appreciated for its visual and aural qualities, both independent of and in combination with each other.

THE GAY MARRIAGE THING is not some historical commentary on gay rights in the United States. It is instead a small story with big implications. By focusing on one suburban couple and the multitude of events that directly affect that couple's otherwise average life, THE GAY MARRIAGE THING strives to show a different side of this issue than documentaries or television newscasts have thus far. This tale is cinematic in its storytelling, rather than journalistic in its reporting. There are plenty of other worthy documentaries where "experts" abound. But this film is about the biggest experts of all, real people. With protesters and their colorful signs serving as a Greek chorus, and an array of opinions from church, state, and everyone in between, this is the film that family members can finally watch together. THE GAY MARRIAGE THING is the documentary that opens dialogue, fully expecting the audience to continue it.

Some episodes of the series were a little too spicy to air, and determined unfit for airing and were cut from the broadcast version. However, these cut scenes have been restored in HARDCORE where you get to see cut scenes from 8 different episodes.

This documentary takes us on a journey through Angolan popular music; starting with such legendary greats from the late 40s as Liceu Vieira Dias and Ngola Ritmos, right up to the present day. The voices and sounds of the most influential performers along the generations play against the back drop of Angola’s political and social history.

In the video Dome (2005), one is confronted with the inexplicable behavior of a boy, his face raised toward the sky, who turns round and round, trancelike, inside a roofless ramshackle building. The camera slowly zooms in on him, assuming his position and action, so that the viewer, too, experiences dizziness. The video is largely silent; the only sound effects are chirping birds, suggesting salvation, and rumbling aircraft, evoking imminent danger. The piece ends exactly where it commenced, avoiding any clear pronouncement regarding the boy’s motivation or his fate.
