Back at the place of his childhood in northern Mesopotamia, the author learns that this entire region will be engulfed in the waters of the largest dam built on the Euphrates in Syria. The filmmaker went there to capture the last images of the valley and daily life in the villages, which he had known well and where he had often returned to work, as part of archaeological missions. It thus testifies to a splendor doomed to be, forever, hidden from view.

Koboïbus, anneaux de nacre en Nouvelle-Guinée

Koboïbus, anneaux de nacre en Nouvelle-Guinée

Even today, large mother-of-pearl rings are still being crafted in some villages in Papua New Guinea in the strictest respect of techniques inherited from ancestors. In the Koboibus region, the manufacture of these rings is a long-term activity. Its production requires the carrying of heavy bivalve shells during a three-day long inland trek from the islands of Mushu to their destination. Once there, they will be patiently sawn with the braided cord, perforated and polished until they reach the desired shape, conjuring up both feminine forms and the Calao bird. This "ancestral currency" is intended to be used in ceremonies and processions but can also be used to buy animals and as a dowry. An essential part of the social functioning of villages like Yabomnu or Kuabila, each ring has its own history which also conveys the memory and beliefs of the peoples of New Guinea.
Actresstress

Actresstress

2004 • 4 min • Italy
A first work saturated in mixed techniques which echo radically through the darkness of Italian independent cinema. Actressstress begins using the two parts of the same camera and adopting an out-of-phase technique, immediately notable for its specularity. These first two minutes highlight themselves for the calm that passes through them. With some rapid progressive editing by the video artist Elisabetta Saiu, the work unfolds a double graphic treatment of the film (coloring the layer which was the emulsion was partially removed and drawing geometric shapes on the other) at an intermittent period. The photographic figure which Drago emphasizes is notable with its skillful framing and planning the luminous surrounding space.

Abu Dis is an Arab village situated in the shadow of Mount of Olives. After the second Palestinian Intifada, the Israeli government decided to build a 2-meter wall right in the middle of the village that divided Abu Dis into two sides. But now the wall is no longer a dividing border as it was intended. Everybody is climbing over it in order to get to Jerusalem. This situation reflects the general chaos of the conflict in which well-defined rules don't exist. The directors followed the day to day life that surrounds the wall through three main protagonists.
William Hodges: The Art of Exploration

William Hodges: The Art of Exploration

2004 • 36 min
The painter William Hodges is increasingly seen as a key figure in eighteenth-century British art and in its relationships with the wider world. In an age of colonial expansion, Hodges accompanied Captain Cook on his second voyage to the Pacific from 1772 to 1775. His vivid paintings of Tahiti, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands were the first such images widely seen in Europe. In the early 1780s, Hodges travelled extensively in northern India, and once again his paintings of landscapes and monuments were a revelation for audiences at home. This film reviews Hodges’ career and his complex and beautiful art. The contributors include Geoff Quilley, curator of the Greenwich exhibition, author and anthropologist Nicholas Thomas, and the eminent broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, who enthuses about the artist he believes is “the most unjustly neglected British painter of the eighteenth century.”
