For this initial phase of the project I conducted 30 hours of videotaped interviews with San Diego lesbian bar patrons who took me to current and former sites of the bars in that town. The result was a 30-minute video about the history of lesbian bars in San Diego.

Since the early days, Hayakawa's works have been established by hand-drawn moving images and digitally processed reproduction and proliferation, and the precision of this process has been accelerating in proportion to the evolution of video equipment. The balance between the organic nature of the vital movement that stimulates the fundamental part of human perception and the abstractness of the work's composition is pleasant. His challenge to always keep an eye on the cutting edge of video technology seems to be exploring a new animation language, and shows us the possibilities of images that can only be achieved through animation. Occupied primarily with itself and all attention concentrated on it - how the setting will develop itself - a dance of symbols and sounds, refreshingly unintentional and without any kind of obligation to arrive at a predefined aesthetic goal. And to the extent that familiar paths are avoided, a fascinating dialogue between sounds and images is in a sense born of itself, from the material.

Sometimes the smallest event can have the most profound repercussions. REFLECTING POOL creates a contemplative but highly charged visual and musical expedition through a cycle of chaos and recovery. The imagery consists of both animated and live action footage which have been transformed and layered in digital post production. The techniques used to create this multilayered work include: painting directly on film which has been hand-manipulated during digital rerecording, object animation, sand animation, and pixelated recordings of changing light reflections and movements of microscopic water creatures.
