A Shivalik Monsoon

An intimate look at the rather distinct identify of the Shivaliks as a mountain range in their own right. This documentary centers around the breeding of the beautiful Paradise Flycatcher (Terpsiphone paradisi), perhaps the most beautiful bird to be found in India. Filmed in a variety of situations in the forest and at the nest, we have used a new technique of remotely-operated cameras to ensure that the birds were not disturbed at the nest. One such cigar-shaped Flycam camera was located 22 feet up in a tree, on a set of boom poles, and operated from an even greater distance. This film has some first-time and rare footage. Shot over four months in the summer months.

The Future is Behind You

A fictional story composed from an anonymous family archive of 1930s Europe with two sisters who play, race, fight, kiss, and grow up together under the shadow of oncoming history. There are at least three levels of research: 1) the home movie in which a family poses for the camera, preternaturally happy; 2) the historical moment which remains as text trace, undermining the image and serving as covert motive; 3) the development of gender identities—the innocent freedom of the elder transformed into socially bruised ‘bride,’ the irrepressibility of the younger moving from tomboy to awkward, diffident adult. At once biography and fiction, history and psychology, The Future is Behind You excavates gestures to get at the heart of narrative; it seeks a bridge between private and public histories. Music by John Zorn, arranged and performed for the movie by Sylvie Courvoisier and Mark Feldman.

In this riveting program, viewers travel from present-day Mexico City to over 500 years into the past to learn about the amazing Aztec Empire. The Aztecs were a warlike people with their own religion, language and cultural rituals. Archaeological excavations that reveal remains of grand Aztec temples and statues provide a starting point for an exploration of this wealthy and highly organized society. Through colorful historical recreations and vivid graphic illustrations, students can easily imagine the Aztec island-city of Tenochtitlan and what everyday life may have been like for Aztec people.

Ancient Maya

The ancient Maya were a highly organized civilization of hundreds of small city-states that developed in what is now Mexico and Central America. One of the earliest civilizations to settle in the Americas, the Maya built great cities dominated by huge stone pyramids that were designed to inspire awe among the people. In this program, students will follow archeologists into the ancient tomb of Lord Pacal, King of Palenque and learn the critical role of the king as both the leader of the city-state and a religious icon believed to be descended from the gods. The Maya were masters of astronomy, studying the stars and planets to create a calendar and determine the best times for planting and conducting sacred rituals. Discover their beautiful art and architecture, the detailed written language of glyphs and the value of corn and cacao in the society of the ancient Maya.

Turn On

To film Turn On, Paci returned to his birth city of Shkoder. The video opens with a series of close-ups of middle-aged Albanian men. Their faces are worn, weathered and tired. Assembled on public steps in the town square, they sit patiently as if in an interminable state of waiting. Time appears to stand still, save for a constant flow of electricity and bulbs of light symbolizing a city in transition to modernity.

By the Sea

In this video Todd McMillan draws inspiration from a work by the German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, 'Monk by the Sea' (1809). As the artist notes, Friedrich’s monk is said to be a self-portrait and embodies the ‘melancholy man’ of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, a time that was characterised by a value system that saw sadness and solitude as an ideal condition for the production of art. In 'By the sea' McMillan re-creates the painting as a performance. The artist filmed himself for 12 hours, from dusk to dawn, facing towards the bleak ocean in search of enlightenment. However, in the end, nothing was achieved; ultimately introspection and self-reflection did not bring any answers or renewed wisdom, and a longing for more remained. (MCA catalogue notes)
