Whiplash edits prevail over vérité moments that eventually become unmoored by dreamlike intrusions. Tidemills

A placid 8.5 minute seaside film, filmed at Tidemills beach near Newhaven on the Sussex coast in summer 2003. It was shot on film (Kodak EXR 7248 as far as I remember) but only ever finished on DV. The sound is mono, recorded entirely where the footage was filmed, and entirely non-sync. There is one tiny audio dropout, where some oxide has dropped-off the now quite old master tape. The SuperSeaCat no longer runs between Newhaven end Dieppe, having been replaced by a much larger ferry, and parts of the land immediately behind the beach are now threatened with industrial development.

Liu Lan tells a story about the break with tradition in China. An intellectual in a white suit meets a traditionally dressed woman in the countryside. Despite their mutual love, their lives seem incompatible. A woman’s voice sings a folksong, Why are people in love always separated from one another?’ The film’s atmosphere is melancholy and the landscape veiled in mist. Here Yang Fudong shows his connections with Chinese landscape painting.

A handheld camera trails a woman as she hikes up the Matterhorn. Suspense rises as she ascends, accompanied by a horror movie soundtrack. The shaky camera offers no reverse shots, implying the presence of an imminent threat. Drawing on the trope of the first-person "killer POV" as identified by film theory, the lack of camera attribution implicates the viewer as the potential stalker. Additionally inspired by Edmund Burke's writing on the terror-provoking quality of the sublime, the soundtrack intensifies in volume each time the camera pans out across the majestic, nearly unfathomable landscape. Though alpine climaxes come into view, the unrelenting sound never allows tension to be released.

Still Loaf with Guitar

The idea of this film was to make a movie still life in which only the paint moved. I made fifty or so paintings using the same template, a still life of a loaf of bread and a tiny guitar, and the only difference between the images is the color choice and the texture of the paint. The choice of images was a mild joke referring to the many 19th century still life paintings featuring bread. It was also, along with Spin Cycle, one of my bread films. I was having a two-man show at a gallery in Brooklyn with a painter who only painted butter. Our show was called “Bread and Butter Works.” - Jeff Scher
