This video is inspired by the life of painter Sam Francis.

Sand and Sea (shot in 1989) was a collaboration between filmmaker Kang Jianning and Liaoning Television producer Gao Guodong. That film depicted the lives of two families: one living in the Ningxia desert and another, a Northeastern fishing family, living on a remote island. For the 2003 broadcast version of Life — which aired as part of the 'The Weight of Time' series on Chinese TV — Gao did not participate, thus this film is only about the desert family, headed by father Liu Zeyuan. Since 1989, Kang has remained in contact with the family and returned to film them multiple times over the years. Kang's filmmaking largely consists of striking landscape shots of the desert and rather tortured interviews with reticent family members, who often provide one-word answers to Kang’s audible questions. Kang himself also appears, and is an important catalyst to drawing out responses. The filmmaker emphasizes a deep connection to place, as opposed to an eventful or dramatic narrative.

This is a live projection event for two 16mm projectors and two loudspeakers. The material in Cycles (1972/77) is recycled for two screens and two soundtracks, with one screen set inside another, giving rise to a surprising induced colours and rhythmic patterns.

It is estimated that well over 1,000,000 citizens of Pyongyang, participated in this Grand Parade celebrating the 55th Anniversary of the Founding of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) which took place on September 9, 2003.

Old Japan Now (2003) explores temple spaces, traditional Noh drama and modern Butoh dance to discover where ritual began and how it persists in modern practices. With footage from several important temples in Kyoto and Tokyo, as well as interviews with practitioners of Noh and Butoh, Old Japan Now seeks to explain some of the historical significance that descends from the Shinto religion and early animism. More poetic than clinical, the film is part diary and part haiku, considering the spiral path of ritual (KJ Mohr).

Filmed on location across England and Ireland, this program takes a close look at the Lindisfarne Gospels—a priceless work of art and one of Christianity’s most enduring symbols of faith—and the historical and religious contexts in which it was created. Michelle Brown, curator of illuminated manuscripts at the British Library, explains who made it and why, presents new findings about its dating, and shows how it unites a remarkable range of motifs and styles from the Celtic Iron Age, Germanic prehistory, ancient and Christian Rome, Coptic Egypt, and Byzantium. A wealth of other devotional objects and images from early Christianity are also featured.

There's life in the old dog yet. This applies to the taz, the daily newspaper from Berlin, more than to any other newspaper. Taz - that means shimmying from crisis to crisis, living on the edge of self-exploitation for almost 25 years now. Born as a left-wing project in the leaden times of the RAF terror and the news blackout, conceived as a counter-public, scorned as a left-wing fighting press controlled by Moscow, smiled at by the established competition, today it is doing well on the battered German print market. A loyal readership, a solid subscriber base, and the cooperative structure carry the left-wing newspaper, which is always on the lookout for the special view, through stormy times. The film shows makers, readers and comrades.

Mutzenbecher films his immediate surroundings - his daughter in a flower dress, a glass of water, window bars, a plastic horse, and himself repeatedly walking out onto the balcony to smoke and - also sitting on the windowsill, also smoking. Carefully framed double exposures and corrections to the framing are exploratory movements - "Which view?" "Which image?" The repetition of sequences at different speeds broadens the scope of this search into the media: "How to show?"

A performance for two projectionists using two 16mm projectors with freeze-frame. This performance version further animates the newspaper text by using intermittent projection, pausing and re-starting the film on its way through the projector. The pauses allow us to read chance fragments of the newspaper. In performing the work two identical prints are shown superimposed with a slight difference in image size, which varies throughout the performance. The projectionists attempt to bring the two films into synchronisation with each other by alternately freezing and running the films. During these brief periods of synchronisation something unexpected happens as a result of the slight misregistration of the two identical images and of their accompanying sounds.

A naked female figure faces the wall and hits it monotonously with towels. Formally the video refers to the photographic series showing prostitutes from the red light district in New Orleans made in 1912 by the American artist E.J. Bellocq. These photographed figures often turned away from the lens and had their faces blurred or veiled. Araya’s use of primary color also refers to her artistic beginnings as a painter.

An experimental digital video exploring the illusions of cinematic movement and depth as corollaries of Zeno's paradox: There is no motion because that which is moved must arrive at the middle of its course before it arrives at the end.

This is a story of a child who was taken repeatedly to the hospital for various tests, one of which was catheterization. Woven throughout are two other stories - one, a training video for nurses demonstrating the procedure and the other, looking through the child's now adult eyes, as she encounters women who echo reminders of the original event. These various echoes trigger post trauma squeamishness and sexual tension that is strange and complex. Both medical ethics and the labels that limit our view of sexual identity are being questioned here.

With music by Mathieu Vanasse and uncompromising lyrics, Virginie Egger's Un pas uses a photomontage technique evoking glossy media images to illustrate the appalling fate of Africa, strangled not only by AIDS but by the greed of Western pharmaceutical companies.

Borrowed Time, which Gorewitz refers to as "a video dirge for my father," combines highly personal subject matter (including a helicopter ride over an active volcano) and the artist's own music, all synthesized through wildly vivid and frenetic electronic image manipulation.

Constricted Light explores concepts of illumination, both literal and metaphorical. Gorewitz writes: "According to the Zohar, a source text of Kabalistic mysticism, we live in a world of indirect light."
