It is not immediately that the cinematic space is filled with fresh shots. The orders of the new government are initially carried out by the filmmakers remaining in Soviet Russia with pre-revolutionary experience. The agitfilm of the Civil War is replaced by a "revolutionary melodrama" by the mid-20s. The expansion of film production requires new personnel: young people come from the "left" theater, who in the very near future will have to create a new revolutionary cinema.

Women of the Sand: Nomad Islamic Women

Women of the Sand: Nomad Islamic Women

2003 • 53 min
A breath-taking documentary about nomad women in the Sahara desert. Filmed in Mauritania, it follows the day-to-day activities of women, documenting their work, family and community life, expectations and emotions. Women of the Sand was filmed in cinema-verité style, with no narration. The non-intrusive camera allows the women to tell their stories in a candid and intimate way. The stunning photography captures the immensity of the desert and the giant sand dunes which have already covered ninety per cent of the country and threatening the very existence of the nomadic lifestyle. Women of the Sand is a tale of women’s resilience and a poignant portrait of a vanishing way of life. The film is part of the permanent film collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York.

A Chukchi family seeks a way between nomadism and modernity. This film was made during autumn 2000, in northeastern Yakutia, not far from the mouth of the Kolyma river, where a family group of reindeer herders tries to find an original way to live autonomously. The films shows the members of this community in the three places where they live and operate: in the tundra, where part of this group takes care of the prosperity of some 2,000 reindeers, thus perpetuating a nomadic way of life and preserving most of the traditional techniques of herding; on the bank of the river, where two members of the group devote themselves to fishing; and in a further southern location, where the family group has established a permanent base : this is where the two ancestors, Egor and Akoulina, intend to accommodate their relatives in order to pass down to the youngsters a cultural heritage that is more and more threatened.

This tragic rupture marked her life and gave rise to one of the most unique families in the history of literature. Les Mineurs

Les Mineurs

2003 • 52 min
In Shanxi province (southwest of Beijing), farmers work, risking their lives, in coal mines to supplement the meager income the land brings them. These small mines, of which at one time there were nearly 6,000, are closing one after the other for safety reasons and because of the pollution they cause. The preparation and celebration of the ceremony of offerings to the mine gods will perhaps be the last in Zhong Village. This independent documentary, filmed in light video, reveals the discreet view taken by the director on women and men who are very close to him, since several are part of his family.
Time Streams

Time Streams

2003 • 6 min
The spiral - like structure and unbroken momentum of the film/musical composition are somewhat suggestive to the artists of intersecting streams (or 'ribbons') of time. The concept is not simply the familiar (although perhaps illusory) forward, linear 'march' of clock time, but rather a nexus in which backwards time (e.g. , dreams, recollections together of segments of time are equally prominent. The visuals are animations and manipulations of hand-painted 35mm motion picture film, small objects, copier art, and liquid mixtures that are extensively interwoven and layered in digital post production. The principal sound sources of the music are generic samples (digitized recordings of instrumental and vocal tones and of environmental sounds such as ice cubes and ping pong balls). However, in re-synthesis the spectral structures (tones colors) of these sounds often have benne retooled and their attack and decay articulations have been altered.
