The Royal Road to the Unconscious

In January 2003, eighty-three York College students eliminated all words from Sigmund Freud's Interpretation of Dreams and, as all words were cut out of his sentence, were pronounced. On June 1, 2003, artist Simon Morris threw the words out the window of a Renault Clio in Redbridge Road, Dorset. The action freed words from the structural unity of Freud's text, subjecting them to a random moment. Maurizio Cogliandro and Dallas Seitz documented the action when 333,960 words emerged from the car window. This 13-second short documents this.

Fulton Fish Market

Mark Street’s portrait of the late-night bustle of the historic Fulton Fish Market, filmed two years before its closing in 2005, shows a world not usually considered when people speak of “New York nightlife.” The textures of the gutted fish and trays of ice under the fluorescent light are complemented by Street’s hand-painted celluloid abstractions throughout the film. Crosshatch

The underlying chessboard image is derived from modified TV test pattern apparatus distorted by audio signals from a sinewave generator; filmed off a monitor with super 8, then coloured in with black ink and coated with household bleach. After initial editing on film it was compiled into positive, negative and split screen in a 1-2-4-2-1 sequence. The 4 track electronic music made with Helliwell's homemade circuits, also follows this symmetrical order.

Together they travel through Greece in search of a new home.The couple record each other throughout their travels, producing a video diary, each expressing her feelings as she observes the other. Their unfurling journey pushes them to question the very heart of their search, including essential dilemmas such as: “Where do I belong?” “What is home?” and “How can we be part of our families when we are different from them?”

The Healing of Bali

For Australian documentary filmmaker John Darling, the tragic events of 12 October 2002 compelled him to re-establish his links with Bali that spanned some 30 years. John had lived, researched and made films in Bali for 17 years from the 1970s to the 1990s, and THE HEALING OF BALI is his observation of the Balinese response to the bombings and the aftermath. His film presents an intimate insight into traditional and modern Balinese methods of grieving and healing. Among those who tell their own stories in the film are Haji Bambang, one of the heroes of the night of the bombings. Many people died in Haji's arms on the night as he worked tirelessly with a group of friends to save the victims or respectfully cover the dead with white cloth.
