Baobao and Beibei

Baobao and Beibei are twins and live in Nanjing. When they were three-and-a-half years old, their parents were laid off. To secure their the children's future, their parents choose for Baobao and Beibei to be gymnast, because the school sports coach had praised them. In order to train sports stars, amateur sports schools conduct cruel training on young children. Parents also have to obey the coach’s request and force their children to practice exercises. They believe that sports are a fair competition, and, as long as they are hard-hearted and push their children to the top, they will have bright prospects. Baobao and Beibei spent their childhood training like this. Their ideal is to participate in the Olympics, win gold medals for their country, and buy a house for their parents.

Horizontal Silence

With its stationary camera shots, tight focus, and almost uniformly black and white images, Seoungho Cho's Horizontal Silence is an experiment in minimalist limitation. A window-like aperture, created by severe digital cropping, fragments all that the lens observes, bodies and architecture alike, lending the images of streetlife and cityscapes the air of surveillance footage. The elegance of the work's understatement is only heightened by the brief moments when it blossoms into color and noise.

Gene Vincent at Town Hall Party

To date, we've seen the same footage of Gene Vincent and other early stars of rock 'n roll over and over again. It seemed as though there wasn't much...and we'd seen it all. But then Bear Family did an exclusive deal for the rights to the old Town Hall Party show, California's largest country music barn dance. On this DVD, we see Gene with the Blue Caps filmed Oct. 25th, 1958, as well as July 25th and Nov. 7th, 1959. He sings Be-Bop-A-Lula, High Blood Pressure, Rip It Up, Dance to The Bop, You Win Again, For Your Precious Love, Rocky Road Blues, Pretty Pearly, Be-Bop-A-Lula, High School Confidential, Over the Rainbow, Roll Over Beethoven and She She Little Sheila.

Mimi Minus on the escalator of horror. Mara Mattuschka´s alter ego once again sets off on a tour de force of physical renunciation. First she goes into a tumble when the ground is pulled out from under her feet. Caught in a weightless space, she undergoes a strange metamorphosis. Mimi´s body is subjected to unnatural forces and gradually deforms, her skin ruptures and - as if the human shell were only an intermediate stage in the process of evolution - is shed like a cocoon; a reptilian monster emerges.

“MUZHCHINI”, when pronounced by emphasizing every letter, means “mature men” in Russian. It is a catchphrase of Yevgeniy Yufit, the father of the Russian necrorealist movement and the hero of the film. This word well describes his attitude towards and interest in specific elements of Russian masculinity, which have been among the several themes of his own films. The second protagonist is Yuri Zverlin, an artist from St. Petersburg and star of Yufit’s feature “Killed by Lightning”; the third, an anonymous “Lenfilm” filmmaker. We were on a trip to the sacred monastery of lake Seliger; it all started inside its ecological pyramid, built without single nail supposedly maintaining the equilibrium of the region. It has no effect on us…

Both fireflies and butterflies, they start surprising nights choreographies that we only see in fragments. At the end their bodies get closer, in the dark, hesitating, sometimes backwards during a lively and retained dance. Yes, that night she danced, but did they really meet? The real film still has to be done.

"Jours en fleurs" is a reclamation of flower-power in which images of trees in springtime bloom are subjected to the floriferous ravages of menarcheal substance in a gestation of decay. The title is based on an expression from my coming-of-age in Acadian French Canada where girls would refer to having their menstrual periods as “être dans ses fleurs”. As a result of incubation in menstrual blood for several months, the original images inscribed on the emulsion undergo violent alterations. The shedding of the unfertilized womb depredates the fertilized blossoms and substitutes its own dark beauty.
