Raised in a more secular time, she struggles to comprehend how religious schools have expanded at once unthinkable rates and presents chilling footage of a mother encouraging her toddler to be a martyr when he grows up. Mixing political analysis with interviews with activist colleagues, noted Islamic scholars and Pakistani women who have chosen to embrace fundamentalism, Sumar’s provocative questions dramatically capture the tension between liberal and fundamentalist forces that are shaping life in contemporary Pakistan.

As is well known, ‘gringo’ is the derogatory term Mexicans use to refer to NorthAmerican citizens. Shot in a central province of Mexico, Alÿs’s video portrays the confrontation between a group of dogs protecting their master’s home and an intruder (the cameraman, invisible to the work’s spectators). In this fiction of sorts, the camera takes an active role in the unfolding of the narrative. By examining the way in which its oppressive gaze can be a form of weaponry as much as a shield, it draws attention to how videocameras have become an epitome of power. Acting ‘like a dog among dogs’, Alÿs deliberately set the camera against the animals knowing that dogs loathe direct eye contact. Throughout the film the camera manages to keep the dogs at bay, sometimes providing a physical armour, sometimes actively entering into the game of menace and recognition.

In the fall of 2003, producers for the Discovery Channel show "DIRTY JOBS" contacted controversial artist Stephen Paternite, inviting him to participate in a new television series showcasing a variety of difficult and often distasteful jobs. The segment was to have host Mike Rowe assist Stephen in the procurement and creation of a new artwork. It was indeed to be a "Dirty Job". An episode ultimately rejected by the network.

At Tio's Tacos, a stand near L.A.'s Lafayette Park, David hears a voice through the pipes of the urinal: someone is trapped in a basement room. David wants to do good, so he creeps downstairs and opens a heavy door: behind it is a massive shirtless Mexican man in a devil mask. He's El Diablo, a captive because of his manly exploits, who insists that David help him get away. Back at David's apartment, El Diablo drinks beer, eats salsa, and gets his powers back just as David's girlfriend, Jennifer, comes home. El Diablo carries her off to the bedroom where she comes under his spell. By the next day, David will do anything to get rid of his guest. Is it too late?
