In December 1927, a funeral car arrived in Leningrad, at the Moscow railway station. It brought an urn with the ashes of academician Vladimir Bekhterev and a glass jar with the brain of a scientist hidden from the public eye. Just a few days before, he had gone to Moscow for a congress of psychiatrists. However, according to a telegram recently found in the archives of the Leningrad Institute of the Brain, Professor Bekhterev was urgently summoned to Moscow by the Council of People's Commissars. The last time he was summoned to the Kremlin was three years earlier to see the seriously ill Lenin. To whom was this urgent call? What happened on that mysterious night before Christmas? And are there any documents about the illness and death of Academician Bekhterev?

Andrus, who died three years later in 2007 at the age of 89, was a polymath and autodidact whose restlessly inquisitive and spritely mind finds generous expression throughout the film. The film follows Andrus through his “Castle of Chaos” home in Albany, Oregon, where he shares his inventions, muses philosophically about the nature of human fulfillment, and articulates a kind of ethics at work in his magic-making. “I can fool you,” he says, “because you’re human.

This abstract film/musical composition conjures an atmosphere in which an aerial mobile is magically suspended in three-dimentional space. The floating pendants of the mobile each reveal a mysterious world filled with unique visual and aural forms, movements and gestures. The visuals have been created using hand-cut animated mattes in combination with hand-painted and etched clear and black 35 mm motion picture film. These images were then digitalized, visually transformed and manipulated, composited and post produced. The computer-generated music consists of continuous variations and transformations of a seemingly simple but open-ended harmonic theme that caroms through many key centers. However, this theme takes shape gradually, and is heard most clearly in a choral setting only after all five «protagonists» of the work have been introduced.

Nashashibi is interested in how people use the space around them.
