Monitor explores a range of interactions between representation, raster grid, the front glass of the TV and its reflections. LILIUM is the second in a series of films featuring vertical strips of color made from digital images of plants. The motif is removed from the viewer's gaze, having appeared only once and then become more indistinct. As a result, the audience is able to distinguish solely the colors of a lily.

El Batalett – Femmes de la Medina

We follow the director's camera into the kitchens and living rooms of a community of Moroccan women. inside the walls of their apartment in Casablanca's old Medina, the women cook, clean, take care of their families and help each other. With their hands in the dough, in the soap whilst washing the laundry, doing the house chores, in the market or at the hammam, between laughter and tears ("We are housewives, that's all. ... Our sport? House cleaning!"). These courageous women, proud of their role, talk about their miserable lives with a great sense of awareness, but without self-pity. They show a surprising vitality, curiosity for life and solidarity.

A New Zealander and an Irishman quit their jobs, cash in their savings and walk 2,626 miles from Mexico to Canada along one of the longest and most challenging foot trails in the world, the Pacific Crest Trail. Their route takes them through some of the most spectacular scenery in North America, including California’s deserts, the high mountain passes of the Sierra Nevada, the Cascade Mountains and the lush forests of Oregon and Washington States. Walking at a challenging pace of 21 miles a day for 4.5 months, they must cross the Canadian border before the approaching winter storms. The ordeal forced one of them to quit just 60 miles before the finish. An amusingly poignant tale about two novice hikers search for adventure and enlightenment on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Algonquin Park, Early March

The sublime, seductive landscape in Algonquin Park, Early March 2002 takes shape through a slow zooming out of the camera, starting with a monochromatic white screen (in fact a pure projection of light) and only revealing the full picture at the end. Location, subject, and especially the viewer’s position (a cliff high above a lake), evoke the effects of C. D. Friedrich’s Romantic painting Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, 1818. The sequence of revelations moves from the pure abstraction of the film’s beginning to the actual scenery and culminates in the final scene of a group of skaters on a small, distant oblong of ice. Even as the movement of the skaters disrupts the contemplation of the motionless landscape, their position off-center reminds us of the background in Pieter Brueghel’s Hunters in the Snow, 1565.
