By Traum a Dream (2002) the unintelligent memories have become distinctly more sinister. Samples of found footage suggesting memory and repression vie chaotically for attention with Dirk’s voice reciting repeated words and phrases, punctuated by splutters and coughs, as though attempting to wrest some meaning. This meaning comes at last with the final sentence dragged out phrase by phrase in the third person: “he began to remember what he didn’t want to remember, what had been taken from when before he knew a secret of before he knew himself”. "Tehran 1380" describes a metropolis where modernity and tradition intermingle in a complex way and presents different points of view concerning the identity and future of the city.

Electronically generated images, including Lissajous patterns from a modified television, were captured on Super-8 film and then treated by hand with coloured inks and bleach. Each of the five sections is closely matched by electronic music from Helliwell's customized circuits.

"Ciao Bella Ciao" was produced in reaction to the score of the Front National in the first round of the French presidential elections in 2002. The montage is structured from shots of Marseille and its surroundings, where Laurence Rebouillon grew up. Ciao Bella Ciao was shot in Super 8 and kinescoped in 35mm, using tests of Super 8 negative film and rushes from her previous Super 8 films. This film evokes memories of a homosexual love breakup and draws up an observation of the recurring racism of the petty bourgeoisie of Marseille. The text scrolls in a voice-over, to an aria from the Marriage of Figaro played on the piano ...

Evokation of My Demon Sister

Cantor reimagines Kenneth Anger’s Invokation of My Demon Brother (1969) as if it were a paean to Hindu goddess of destruction Kali instead of Lucifer. In Cantor's take, Anger's hypermasculine imagination of the occult is replaced by that of an ironic depiction of female "hysterics"; a romantic strings section sweeps over the Mick Jagger Moog soundtrack; and Anton LeVay and Bobby Beausoleil are replaced by Sissy Spacek in Carrie and Christine Noonan in Lindsey Anderson’s if….

Hojas de Maíz

Hojas de Maíz was made at the request of Cincinnati composer and instrument-builder Anthony Luensman. The film was originally envisioned to be part of Tony's installation, Irato, in which each of his twenty-plus pieces, on exhibit in a civic art center, responded to viewers' pressing of a button. An exhibit of doorbells, imaginatively defined. One of Tony's stocks-in-trade is the use of discarded upright piano innards as electrified harps; my film contribution was to be projected amidst arrays of vibrating piano strings as art patrons took an elevator from the ground floor to a performing arts center. While this eventually proved infeasible due to ambient light conditions in the building, it did inspire the look and basic vocabulary of the film.
