Before acclaimed author Piri Thomas could write his famous novel "Down These Mean Streets", he had to live on them. This biopic shows how his childhood in Spanish Harlem, a six-year prison stint and other key events shaped his artistic development. The film combines rarely seen footage, still photos and mixed-media images to illustrate Thomas's life and an influential career that focused on revealing the injustices of poverty and racism.

Amaurosis is an experimental documentary about Nguyen Duc Dat, a blind, American Asian guitarist living in Little Saigon, California. Dat was a 'triple outcast': blind, Amerasian and an impoverished orphan. Beyond their disabilities, this community of Vietnamese-Americans is oppressed on many levels: language and cultural differences, immigrant and lower income status, and societal misunderstanding and alienation. AMAUROSIS strives to present the life of one member from this unique community and promote his rich contributions.

Let the dirt on the film kiss the dirt in the ground. Maryland humidity wore it down to its wisps. Much later, sound recorded in Brooklyn. Teenage skateboarders smoking cigarettes and jumping off the steps at my local subway entrance. A Russian festival in the park, much singing and speechmaking, all incomprehensible to me. The schism between the country and city, so clear at last.

"I was tired of aimlessly walking the club circuit so I decided to entertain myself in a more interesting fashion, combining clubbing with the creation of a work of art. Wearing the dress code appropriate to each club so that I would not stand out from the crowd, and armed with my camera, I walked into the ladies toilets of various night clubs asking the girls and women I bumped into the same question: What is in your handbag? It is unbelievable how much one can learn about girls by checking the contents of their bags and also listening to their own comments about them."

In Lights (Body), flashing lights in a busy nightclub are accompanied by the hypnotic dance beat "Don't Be Light (The Hacker Remix)," by the French duo Air. The ravers are out of sight, but specks of dust rising from their clothes and skin are visible in close-up shots of the beams of light. Like Tillmans's earliest photographs of nightclubs, the work presents the dance floor as a site of liberation and resistance, generated through experiments in representation and collective assembly.
