"This work was inspired by images of people on the internet. Around 2000, online chatrooms started to become popular. However, most people would just want to show their bodies or look at women’s breasts and genitals. Phoebe Man created a walking vagina to question whether women are just pieces of meat. In the video, Rati lives like an ordinary woman, she would go to the library to read, and menstruate each month. With her look, even if she were doing something ordinary, it would look absurd. The work attempts to challenge gender stereotypes, and looks at women’s social and cultural images in a deconstructive manner, to open up an imaginative space." - timesartscenter.org

Assassination: Colonial Style – Patrice Lumumba, an African Tragedy

Patrice Lumumba – the first Prime Minister of the newly independent African state, The Congo. To fellow Africans he was a hero – the man who had won his country’s independence from the Belgians. But for the secret services of the western powers he was a threat. It was at the height of the Cold War, when the superpowers of both East and Western blocs were competing for spheres of influence in the New Africa. Congo was vital to Western interests because of it’s vast mineral resources. The West believed Lumumba was pro-soviet and would open the door to communist control of this mineral rich region. CIA agent Larry Devlin received 100,000 dollars from the Agency along with telegraphed instructions to make the “elimination of Lumumba” the “priority goal” of his covert action.

I booked a holiday in Tunisia: one week in a 3-star hotel, and spent the entire time there. The film subjects everything to my own point of view: the architecture, the beach with its umbrellas, tourists who are both present and absent, the sort of biding that such hotels tend to be, and the sea.

The film is based on Axel's Diaries cross-cut with the story of how the Nobel brothers built an oil empire in the late 1800s. We follow Axel Blomgren until everything is confiscated by the communists in 1920 and Axel escapes home to Sweden.

The hands of three generations are seen in this work – a young boy, father, mother and grandmother. Slowly and deliberately, the four pairs of hands are shown forming a series of predetermined movements. These are taken from sources as diverse as Buddhist mudras (defined ritual or symbolic gestures) and 17th-century English chirologia tables, which illustrate hand gestures that accompany emotional states. Viola explains that the work is “a timeline that encompasses both the parallel actions of the individuals in the present moment and the larger movements of the stages of human life.” It is part of a series called 'The Passions', which is inspired by early European devotional paintings and explores human emotions.
