The Long Count (Rumble In The Jungle), is the second of three works in which the artist has painstakingly removed Muhammad Ali from the boxer’s most famous bouts. This piece continues his investigation of racial identity through his use of popular iconography, namely athletes and movie stars, across various media.

The Light Touch Dust Nebula

The Light Touch Dust Nebula is a hand-painted film, optically printed with carefully controlled temperature and lighting. Thermotropic (temperature sensitive) liquid crystal paint applied to decayed film changes from red to blue with heat. In-camera optical effects expose the contrast between the two extremes. This film exposes the warmth of light and its birth to form and motion in cinema.

In The House of Equal and Opposite Reaction was a gift that I was reluctant to accept and even more reluctant to share until I did so accidentally, calming somewhat my mind and the minds of my unwitting audience. The majority of the footage was filmed from my rooftop on September 11th, 2001 with my super-8 camera, which was already loaded with film from my home movies (my dog, Myairo, whom I filmed in my home over a month prior.)

In the course of moving from video to film, the images become flattened into painterly icons and patterns; their contrast has been increased, and the colors shifted into gemlike purples, greens and blues. "Super 8 images of a cellophane-covered male body floating in water are blown up into two separate movies—one video, the other 16mm—which screen simultaneously as superimpositions upon one another, further altered through colored gels placed in front of the projectors. The overlapped projections create an uncanny 3D effect, while the claustrophobic shots of the man's open mouth attempting to breath through clinging cellophane and roiling water, and the film's respiratory soundtrack, unveils a thanatos within its eros." —Ed Halter

Mixing old tech with new, these lyrical abstractions explore red-gold color fields created with photograms (direct exposure of film without cameras), then animated through 16mm rephotography and digital manipulation. Soothing and melancholy, Wills works in the aleatory-painterly tradition of Brakhage, but with sound: the tracks consist of classical music, spoken word, and altered bits of everyday noises. Floral images link her work to Victorian embroidery and other womanly parlor arts. (Ed Halte)

Glutinosity, 2001, depicts a stage resembling the context of a riot and social masses as politic actors: uniformed crowd pulls and pushes the bodies of another group which seems to be glued together, presenting a single multifarious human mass. These strength and counter strength create a choreography around the density of the crowd and the weight of the crowded bodies.

She discovers her role model when a band of Montessori school children invite her to a demonstration given by a legendary Hollywood master. After intense training, the children's adroit sword play awakens their competitive instincts. They rebel against their teacher, and a harrowing duel ensues. The heroine faces internal turmoil, when the Montessori gang forces her to choose between her master's path and their growing power. The film combines optically printed and hand processed original and appropriated imagery.

67/97 begins by imagining the information collected when a bar code is scanned, and then asks: What if everything could be read by a scanner? What information would be retrieved, what secrets revealed? A barrage of text is generated as a laser reads bar codes and then food, objects, and the body, while the beeps of the scanner create an uncanny soundtrack. Cho employs the technology of scanning to meditate upon the process of information gathering and the construction of meaning. 67/97 is a lyrical and witty investigation of data systems, surveillance and information overload.

We see images, hear sounds, they interpret… What is ‘the city and the world’? What is ‘the room’? What does ‘the jails of time contract’ mean? This piece reveals the feelings prompted by reflection on the simple wording of a poem, which is ultimately reconstructed to propose a discussion around time and where we wasted it.
