Playful situations are shown—as intimate moments, or staged as a show. Behind their superficial ease, profound existential realms can be sensed that otherwise seem to be suppressed in everyday life.

Slices of Time

A wonderful example of a TV documentary that transcends the limitations of the TV screen. “Slices of Time” tells the story of two women born during the First World War who saw the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy collapse and a new state form: Yugoslavia. The two grandmothers of the author Zemira Alajbegović Pečovnik lived in different cultural and religious spheres – one in predominantly Muslim Bosnia, the other in Christian-influenced Slovenia – and yet were connected through their children and grandchildren. Global and personal history, childhood, love and wars intertwine.

Two people live in a small Siberian town: one is cheerful and cheerful, pleases his fellow countrymen with virtuoso accordion playing, the other is gloomy and withdrawn – builds a church in the middle of the town and talks about the imperfection of man.

Lauburu

Guernika, year 1937. The city is savagely bombed from the air by a battalion of fascist troops. During the bombardment, Republican artillery shoots down an Italian plane. The pilot manages to parachute very close to a village inhabited by three women. Badly wounded on the ground, he is going to be finished off by one of them, Ikerne. This one, however, feels disturbed by the man's presence, and in a purely impulsive act she decides to take him to the house's barn. The presence of the man in the house reveals the lethargic desire of the three women. But it will also bring out the small conflicts and contradictions that the harsh survival conditions in the house have generated. The solution finds its way between desire for man and hatred for the enemy.

Sarcophagus

The film is based on the story of the Oval Sarcophagus with Dionysian scenes from the antique collection of the Pushkin Museum im. A.S. Pushkin. At various times, the owners of the sarcophagus were the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus, the Italian Cardinal Marco Sittico Altemps, and finally, the Minister of Public Education of Russia, Count Sergei Uvarov, who purchased the sarcophagus for his "museum" in the Porechye estate near Moscow. The history of the sarcophagus is an occasion to reflect on the connection between epochs and cultures, the vicissitudes of fate, the mystery of life and death. Filming was carried out in various museums in Moscow, Rome, in the Porechye estate and the Hermitage.

Patina

The title of the film - Patina - suggests many meanings around the phenomenon of "surface" that function in this hand painted film. Taking footage from a distant past and reworking it through paint and montage, creating veils thorough which only glimpses of the photographed images can be seen - becomes not a metaphor for but a visceral expression of the effects of time. The goal of the work is not to be excessively "poignant" or "nostalgic" about the past but rather to celebrate the vibrancy of seeing (and painting) it anew. The process of transforming photography into paint is particularly significant for me as I have been painting on paper and canvas for the past several years and this is my first completed film from this period. - Peter Herwitz

Eskil Holmgren (87 years old) and Vera Hultgren-Lundquist (84 years old) are second-generation immigrants. In Oberá in Argentina's northern province of Misiones, there is a large colony of Swedish descendants who have preserved both language and traditions for almost a hundred years. But soon only the names remain that remind of the Swedish families who, in the hope of a better life, left everything and emigrated to the other side of the world.

Terra Incognita

This collaborative work is a fusion of imaginary and music expressing an ever-changing flux and paradox in perceived space and location and involving notions of navigation, geometry, and mapping.The animated imagery derives from hand painting and etching on 35 mm clear and black motion picture film. While digitizing, the film was physically bent, twisted, rotated and treated to a number of hands-on manipulations. The images then underwent further visual transformation in digital post production.The music was largely an intuitive process. the basic sound sources including thumb piano, pygmy pipe and gamelan metallophone tones, were digitally transformed and then contrapuntally layered, inter-cut, diced and threaded into a pulsating «spider web» design suggested by a visual imagery.

This autobiographical, animated portrait draws on fable and real-life experience to evoke intimately the far-reaching effects of a serious illness in progress. The film mixes drawings, photographs, models, objects and paintings.

O, Where Oblivion Dwell

An audiovisual account of the construction of James Lee Byars's "The Gold Sphere" in October 1992 and its destruction on 8 June 1994. The whole process is visualized in images while Miguel is heard in a voiceover reciting "Granada", a poem published in the catalogue "Plus Ultra" as a presentation of Bryan's work, blended in with a musical collage of "Una granaína" and "Media granaína".
