The Jesus Trilogy and Coda is composed of the four following parts: (1) IN JESUS NAME presents an almost continuous fluttering movement midst the complexity of multiple small shapes in mostly autumnal colors, like unto a wind moving through fall leaves. (2) THE BABY JESUS begins with pearl-pinks and gold-flecked shapes midst 'garden greens'. (3) JESUS WEPT utilizes a variety of shapes and colors so fretted and interlocked with darkness as to create the sense of a glamorous terror within which palpable shapes of 'tears' appear and weave a counterbalance of sorrowful calm. (4) CODA: CHRIST ON CROSS contains the most easily nameable of all the shapes in this trilogy: it is, thus, an aesthetic 'summing-up' with full emphasis upon the crucifixion which is visible again and again as a mass of twisting lines and tortured forms, flecked with vermillion blood-likeness. A woman drinks tea, washes a window, reads the paper: simple tasks that somehow suggest a kind of quiet mystery within and beyond the image. Sometimes one hears the rhythmic, pulsing symphony of crickets in a Baltimore summer night. Other times jangling toys dissolve into the roar of a jet overhead, or children tremble at the sound of thunder. These disparate sounds dislocate the space temporally and physically from the restrictions of reality. The small home-movie boxes within the larger screen are gestural forms of memory, clues to childhood, mnemonic devices that expand on the sense of immediacy in her “drama.” These miniature image-objects represent snippets of an even earlier media technology: film. In contrast to the real time video image, they feel fleeting, ephemeral, imprecise.

The film builds up a surface tension that seems quite rocky and solid. This surface gradually begins to crumble and a bubbling of dusty gold begins, like a geyser, to break up this tension. The surface of paints and rhythms flows with the water and everything inside of the body of work spills out until electrical creative charges accompany the liquid gold and rock. Suddenly, out of this storm comes a red and yellow explosion of warmth and creativity, spilling out over the body like a lava flow.

A penetrating, no-holds-barred video film in three parts about the crime that dominates and destroys Brazilian society. Part 1 shows four young thieves and drug dealers from the favela in Rio de Janeiro, who try to justify their lives as gangsters. In part 2, two Brazilian policemen talk about their 'moonlighting', including hit jobs. Part 3 is about a Brazilian evangelist who has given up his vocation to lead a life of crime.

The toddlers in a Russian playgroup are showing a striking number of adult traits. Here and there, serious romantic relationships are budding, and some tots are determined to marry. One infant may urge her friend to keep his voice low, or else the filmmakers will hear everything they say, but most pre-schoolers are undisturbed and continue their everyday activities. They play with dolls, hang around on the playground and chatter a lot, particularly about who is whose friend and who is whose lover. In this environment, the direct cinema style seems even more natural than it usually is. Two years ago, IDFA screened Victor Kossakovsky’s film Pavel and Lyalya (a Jerusalem Romance), which dealt with the profound and unselfish love of an elderly couple. In contrast, the infatuations of young kids are volatile and playful, because ten minutes later you can be married to someone else.

A look at the lives of the urban poor living in "Las Colonias", a group of over 1500 unincorporated settlements along the Mexican-American Border Region.

This is a film that I had planed on making for more than two years before I began to shoot it. The Idea was to shoot an entire 400 ft. magazine of film from start to finish without stopping.

In The Morphology of Desire, Robert Arnold digitally morphs romance novel illustrations into one another to create the illusion of cinematic motion. Using covers from 1960s and 1970s romance novels he has collected, Arnold constructs a lascivious vignette that explores how gender and desire are portrayed in popular culture. According to Arnold, the narrative is “about a couple representing a popular culture romantic ideal, caught at an ambiguous point of either turning to face their desire or turning away from it, never able to fully escape from it or fully realize it.”

A young man spitting cherry pits, with an off-screen accomplice, attempts to hit the camera´s lens with one of them. Various moods become apparent on the way to a certain goal: effort, failure, then finally success. A happy, lighthearted film.

At the turn of the century, China experienced drastic transformations in its socioeconomic structure and political system, which brought forth the acceptance of many concepts that had previously been opposed. These included making quick money, "selling" your body, and accepting hidden pornography. Using an inconspicuous hidden camera over the course of several days, Cui Xiuwen artfully captures how nightclub women act during this time – including dressing up, counting money, speaking to family members, and negotiating deals inside the ladies' room at one of the most popular nightclubs in Beijing.
