ALL THAT'S SOLID (and) MELTS INTO AIR are each separate films shot at an exhibition of the urban landscape artist Tyree Suyton in Cambridge at Harvard. I was struck by the redemptive critical and visionary character of his work which struck me as similar to G.M. Hopkins or Clarence Smith. Coincidentally as I was shooting these films I went to a screening of Charles Burnett and asked him what film he would like to make but couldn't get the money for. He replied, "a feature narrative about Tyree Suyton." So I put together four of the films from Spring 2000 into a four-film work called "4 For Charles Burnett - All That's Solid Melts Into Air". They are: ALL THAT'S SOLID, LIGHT LICK, TOSCANINI'S EUROPEAN SIDEWALK CAFE, and MELTS INTO AIR.

Inspired in part by a performance by Marina Abramovic and Jean Cocteau’s Orpheus. I eat an onion with a woman, then we kiss. The footage is played backwards and starts with kissing and crying before the onion emerges.

The Documentary record the life of a panda, Ying, and his Trainer, Bai, in their small residential room inside China Wuhan Acrobatic Troupe. They both share a life behind bars where the outside world is out of reach and only accessible through a television.

One of the layers of this piece consists of an image of a Sufi like spinning dancer in a white lab coat. This out-take from an earlier film, Phonogramme, had somehow become splattered with a kind of mould that formed small flower like shapes in the frame. It is combined with a loop of hand-painted film which deteriorates slowly each time the loop repeats. The accidental misspelling of the title was retained as a piece of word play.

Because of difficulties where they live in the north east of China, a husband and wife go back to their hometown in Shandong Province and settle in their hometown by the sea with three children. With no land of their own, they have to face the sea, and start their life again.

The lowest administrative body in Chinese cities is the neighborhood committee; the staff are retired old ladies, known as the "Little Foot Detective Team." Community security, cleaning, posting slogans, catching thieves, and issuing government documents are all the responsibility of the neighborhood committee. The neighborhood committee for this film is located on the south bank of the Emperor's Garden in Beijing, where all the people living here are now. The film began shooting in 1999, when the Chinese government celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The neighborhood committees were busy cleaning up their domains and collecting fees.

This absurdist, microscopic film noir follows the activities of an underground network of ill people, desperate to create alternative methods of self-care in a world where natural resources are disappearing. Contrafacta is a collage animation made by Toronto filmmakers Roberto Ariganello and Chris Gehman. Using images from medieval artworks, and quotations from the writings of medieval mystics and poets, Contrafacta creates a web of related images and events without a simple connective narrative.

On October 17, 1961, the popular and pioneering pianist-composer Dave Brubeck performed on Ralph Gleason's Jazz Casual, the television show that showcased some of the finest jazz artists in a half-hour of no-frills performance and conversation. Backed by the Lester Young-influenced alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello, Brubeck and his combo perform some of their odd-metered hits. Desmond's dancing ditty, "Take Five" is rendered in a faster tempo than the studio version. Brubeck's ragtime-flavoured "(It's a) Raggy Waltz," highlights his percussive piano lines, while "Castillian Blues" and the Turkish strains of "Blue Rondo a la Turk" reveal his multicultural, compositional genius. Gleason, the show's creator and host, was a well-respected, San Francisco-based jazz critic and author. He remarks during the show that Dave Brubeck was "a provocative, experimental, and interesting musician." That statement is still true today.

Here's a documentary about people in NY, NY during the year 2000 who drank in bars during the AM hours. Most NYC bars during that era offered first calls, so the bar opened and would serve alcohol starting at 8 am. Ah the good old days.

A projected text is going through two transformations in terms of presenting information. At first one is able to understand its meaning. However, in the second stage, the text has been transformed into digital language which can only be read by a computer. Finally, with the third level, the digital code has been used to convey a flicker effect. The text is now a mere physical sensation, devoid of intelligible contents.
