Linear Tracking

The camera is filming people walking through streets and parks, but is not following anyone in particular or trying to register any particular event. Sometimes the images are blurred and filtered by falling snow, or are filmed via the reflecting surfaces of metal or water. They are distorted into scarcely recognizable, elegantly moving fields of colour, or dreamy contours in tones of grey. The image is carefully framed and divided into horizontals and verticals. The branches of trees in the foreground or floating leaves and circles on the water give it depth, thereby perfecting the composition.

On February 4, 1999, 19 of the 41 shots fired in 10 seconds by 4 NYPD Street Crimes Unit cops hit Guinean immigrant Amadou Diallo as he stood in the vestibule of the building where he lived in the Bronx…. This video essay seizes on the grotesque factual precision of this numerical data, proceeding with an intense contemplation of how police violence is produced and then addressed by other forces on the city streets.

Translation Series

Temporal isomorphism and indexical relation between recording and reproduction. Film is used strictly as a light recording medium. I exposed 16mm raw film stock without a camera, by opening a film can and holding the film to the light of a site. This exposure encodes on the film both the light of the site and the performance of a gesture. These films are the result of a series of small “acts” that when projected function as documentations/translations of movement from space to time, meters to feet, photons to grain. While living in Paris, I mapped the contours of my apartment exposing film to the light of different rooms.
