Silver Rockets Kool Things - 20 Years of Sonic Youth

This portrait of the New York band Sonic Youth marking the band’s 20th anniversary covers its history from the beginnings to today. Numerous video clips and films of live gigs as well as interviews with, and reminiscences of, collaborators over the years will be used to document the musical development of one of the most innovative and influential bands of the last two decades. Contemporaries include former mentor Glenn Branca, composer and conductor of guitar symphonies which had a seminal influence on participating musicians such as Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore, who went on to become Sonic Youth’s guitarists. The band members‘ numerous creative arts projects and other musical activities – in particular improvised music – will be covered in depth.

Incontrare Picasso

Half a century after his documentary on Picasso, which was cut into various short films in Italy in order to distribute it more easily, Emmer returns to his own material to re-appropriate it and transform it: it would no longer be the asymmetric tale of an anonymous filmmaker who observes the genius painter in amazement, but a work created in complicity between the two authors reflecting on their two expressive means. It is half a tale that finally takes on the form sought by Emmer (the tale of a pigeon between two wars), and half a processual film in which we see Picasso create a mural that only exists in this film. Incontrare Picasso (Meeting Picasso) with the voice-over in the first person points towards the full expository and discursive authorship of Emmer’s two main essays: Bella di notte and Con aura…senz'aura.

Tell Me the Truth About Love

A look at the theme of love in the life of the poet WH Auden, who wrote such famous poems as "Stop All the Clocks" (made famous in "Four Weddings and a Funeral"), "Lay Your Sleeping Head My Love" and "As I Walked Out One Evening". This film centres on new interviews with Auden’s close friends and looks at how his most important relationships were reflected in some of the greatest poems of the 20th century.

Distilled in 1996 from an earlier 50-minute trilogy, this 26-minute film was shot in Greece and Austria and structured around two recurring intertitles, “He said” and “he said.” Each introduces delicate studies of light and place—hotel interiors, cafés, hillsides, storefronts, and street life—framed in parallel variations. The title invokes Apollo as savior and healer.
