Major and Minor Miracles

Miracles, in Sweden? A village curate with paltry attendance at his services gets a call one Sunday in December to meet an emissary from the Vatican who has come to test a child for special powers (he's the young son of a farming couple in the curate's parish; he's come to the Vatican's attention via a roundabout chain of odd events). The curate takes the visitor to the farm, convinced that nothing is out of the ordinary. Then, event by event, the curate comes to think otherwise and must figure out a way to save the child from a life in Rome. Are miracles afoot? The very fact the curate's car starts in mid-winter may be a sign of things to come.

K.I.L.L. – Kinetic Image Laboratory/Lobotomy

An accumulation of 180 different perspectives of a bank’s skyscraper. Each perspective takes just one frame.At first there is chaos, then systems of visual organisation develop. The sound consists of a sampled phrase meaning: “Our power is boundless and our means are inexhaustible”. The editing plays with the relationship between the words and the images creating different meanings in breaking the succession of the words.

Discovering Electronic Music

This is part of a collection of rarely seen early avi films - primarily using relatively primitive techniques of scratch video then Adobe Premiere editing, resulting in a particular lo-fi look which isn't particularly intentional, but reflective of the process. "Music Of Your Own" and "Burning" originally existed as audio-only pieces on the "Thermos Explorer" album (2000), and since the audio was originally sourced from film it was later possible to recreate the stories in visual form.

In Detroit, hair styling isn't just a matter of personal grooming, it's a way of life, and Andrew Dosunmu's documentary Hot Irons offers an inside glimpse at Motor City hair salons that turn the tresses of their African-American clientele into remarkable works of art. Dosunmu takes his cameras to Detroit's annual "Hair Wars" competition, in which stylists compete to see who can create the wildest and most outrageous hairdo. Offering a stark contrast between the unique aesthetic of the stylists and the grinding poverty of inner city Detroit, which never fully recovered from the 1968 riots, Hot Irons shows how events like "Hair Wars" brings a sense of art and purpose to a community where both are often lacking.
