Dhiava: The Autumn Journey

The film takes place in the Pindos Mountains in North Western Greece. We meet two brothers, Tsiogas and Steryios Anthoulis with their flocks of sheep on the mountains, then the third brother Vassilis in the village of Samarina. Tsiogas and Vassilis tell through interview the history of the Dhiava and its significance for them today, in a Greece that is changing rapidly. The journey is the last remaining part of the tradition of transhumance that used to be commonplace all over Europe.

To the Beach

One hears in the call of the sea the feeling of a promise made to us before birth, that we can know the world not merely as an atlas of things seen, but rather as a continuum of felt experience in which it is impossible to distinguish between our selves and the world around us: self and other are melded into one. To the Beach explores this feeling from three vantage points, filmed (respectively) near, in, and under the sea using a variety of techniques, and registers the resulting images onto hand-made film emulsion. I. Approaching the Shore: in which the ocean first offers its irresistible salty scent. II. Swimming: in which we become again what we are. III. Seeing Stars: as above, so below.

Dirty Handz - Destruction on Paris

Released in 1999, this 50-minute video opens the trilogy. It focuses only on graffiti in the railway world. There are various activities such as the interior degradation of metro wagons (bomb marker and marker, window scratches), but also that of subway station. You can also see different scenes where the exteriors of metros, RER and trains SNCF are painted. Long passages are dedicated to the exhibition of his works when the trains roll. This film has been shot one image after another, based on already existing images, paintings, photos : Vésale’s “the écorchés”, drawings by Agipa de Nettesheim and Leonardo da Vinci, photos by Muybridge, Marey, Londe, architectural plans… These still images are knocked together to give the movement, rhythm and echo necessary to refer to these times where Man has tried to find through research, science, philosophy and art the concept and sentiment of Totality. The editing image by image allows us to explain the connections that link each image, their contents and their symbols. Like a synthesis, through the prism of Totality, the film shows all these questions and researches about Man and his world.

In 19th century Europe, photographs of the “grotesque” such as deformed bodies and corpses were popular and enthusiastically traded and collected. In contemporary Japan, a video about voluptuous little Sayomi who loves to collect Mickey Mouse paraphernalia—how do people look at her as she sways to Baroque in a white negligee? Do modern-day cavaliers court her? Will her domineering mother save her from evil eyes? The director hands her the video camera and attempts to present the world through her perspective. She dresses her up in extravagance, shows off her glamorous presence, and proves that she is no sissy object or victim—she is larger than life.

The Most Unknowable Thing

Mary Patiernio set out to make a documentary about what she thought might be the last few years of her brother’s life when she found out about his HIV-positive status. However, as the title suggests, things didn’t quite pan out as she expected. Beginning with the video footage from her brother’s surprise marriage to his female chiropractor, following his break up with boyfriend Carlo, the documentary (which was five years in the making), cleverly unwinds to tell one of those stories you simply wouldn’t believe in a fictional film.

The brutal murder of her father in 1968 not only left a hole in filmmaker Martha Swetzoff’s life, but also many questions as to who he really was. His figure became shrouded in mystery when she discovered that he was gay and the murder ‘’gay-related’’. Confronting her own grief in the deeply personal Theme: Murder, Swtzoff uncovers scores of journals and letters, and contacts former friends of her father to assemble a portrait of a man curiously obsessed with death, who may have led a rich, gay life in ‘50s and ‘60s Boston – a man who had not only secrets, but an entirely separate life.

"human tragedy on a grand scale" is a response to "never confuse movement with action" and the struggle of dealing with the Hemingway family. What results is a piece very different from its predecessor - a visual poem, episodic in nature, made up of travel diaries compiled while working with Patrick. The issue now is the reconciliation and cathartic transformation from a Hemingway biography to a re-consideration of autobiography. The biographer takes us on a journey away from Patrick Hemingway - the cool, controlled persona - to East Vancouver, documenting lives stripped bare of pretension. The scope is broadened. Patrick Hemingway and all things Hemingway become insignificant.

Phat Free

Phat Free begins with several minutes of darkness overlaid with an unidentifiable loud, metallic sound. As the video image is revealed, a man—Hammons himself—appears dressed in a long coat, felt hat, and sneakers, kicking a metal bucket down a deserted city sidewalk late at night. The work was shot in 1995 to document Hammons’s late-night performance and edited into an independent video work four years later. At first seemingly violent, the noise evolves into an almost musical rhythm that is synchronized with the protagonist’s methodical movements. The title elaborates this musical allusion, conjuring both the streetwise lyricism of rap and hip-hop and the improvisational nature of jazz.
