Buddha Weeps in Jadugoda

1999 • 55 min
A documentary film on uranium mining and its deadly impacts on the tribal people living near the Jadugoda mine, mill and tailings dam, in the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand (India). Unsafe mining, milling and tailings management by UCIL in this area for almost 30 years has resulted in excessive radiation, contamination of water, land and air, destruction of the local ecology, and lead for to genetic mutation, and slow death for the people of the region. The film attempts to depict the gross misuse of power by the authorities in displacing the original inhabitants of the region, the utter lack of concern for internationally accepted norms and safety precautions in the handling of uranium and its by-products, and their callousness of its disastrous impact on the people and the region.

The Blue Screen of Death

1999 • 2 min • United States of America
Often mistaken as a commercial, this short film was produced by a contractor to entertain the Sun Microsystems sales force at a sales conference. It, and others like it, were produced during a time when Sun was fighting against the growth of Windows use in corporate environments. The joke is about how unstable Windows NT generally was, while Sun's Solaris (Unix) was superior.

Nocturne

Nocturne

1999 • 3 min
The icy, long and dark nights of remote northern latitudes can easily create feelings of hypnotic isolation and disorientation. Like an imaginary compass, chance glimpses and glimmers of light mixed with sparse, restless sounds give direction and meaning in a dark and secluded environment. The lyrical narrative of Nocturne may be thought of as an apprenhensive and compelling passage through the darkness, charged by sudden visual surges and plays of light, and the progressive tightening of the musical form.
Somewhere

Somewhere

1999 • 5 min
In SOMEWHERE, we have attempted to create a fluid, high energy, game-like work, intricate in its construction but often impulsive and sometimes unpredictable in its constantly shifting focus and gestures. «Close», «distant» and illusory spatial perceptions, and a play between symmetrical and assymetrical patterns (which often «turn on a dime») underly the formal design and expression of both the imagery and the music. The images were created by hand-painting directly on 35mm film, then digitizing these images to apply visual effects. Many of the musical sounds were created by computer accoustical analysis and, during resynthesis, transformation of instrumental, vocal and environmental sounds. Algorithmic programs written by the composer generated many of the rythmic, melodic and textural ideas, but others were created the «old fashioned» way, at the composer's piano.
