However, Hideto Ishii's "Lights" was the only one that immediately after the screening, one audience member exclaimed, "It's amazing!" and stood up and applauded. When I thought who it was, it turned out to be the filmmaker Isao Kota. Sitting through this film for nearly 50 minutes can be a pain. However, what is unfolding here is neither a spectacular view nor a visual pleasure. If you were to ask me what it was, I would have to say "abyss." That's why I'm attracted to. As you watch this movie, you can eliminate the distractions that occupy most of your mind one by one. A third of our life we spend sleeping. This period, when the body is at rest and sensory input is more or less inactive, is in fact a time of intense activity for the brain. This documentary, which interweaves informative interviews with internationally renowned researchers and vivid graphics gives a clear explanation of what happens to us during those unconscious hours. Sleeping soundly enhances psychological well being and productivity, while sleep disorders undermine mental and physical health.Some of the topics covered are: the stages of sleep; its role in restoring the body’s metabolic energy; sleep cycles and circadian rhythms; the role of melatonin; sleep disorders, and adaptations during aging. The film includes footage of early sleep deprivation experiments and offers interesting tidbits on the sleep habits of Dali, Napoleon and Einstein. Among the experts represented are psychologist William Dement from Stanford University and neuropsychologist Allan Hobson from Harvard.

Chance Meetings 1: In these short silent films (each is about 30 seconds long), chance encounters play the central role. In a fixed and immobile frame, two men meet. This does not result in any actual contact; the two men only look at each other. This almost pedestrian and intriguing phenomenon repeatedly unfolds without giving away its mystery. Chance Meetings 2: In these short film loops (each about 1 minute long), the ‘gaze’ is key; in a repetitive motion, the viewer is confronted with the gaze of ‘the other’. In a series of concatenated images, this gaze quickly takes on an almost provocative character. This sometimes evokes feelings of confrontation, as if the viewer is actually being addressed.

For the 1999 Venice Biennale, Alÿs created an unofficial performance for the occasion, titled Duett. The piece begins with Alÿs entering Venice by train while fellow Belgian artist Honoré d’O landed at the airport, and each man is carrying one half of a tuba. After drifting through the labyrinth of streets, they eventually met three days later and reassembled the musical instrument. The work is emblematic of Alÿs’s exploration of estranged or misplaced halves striving for reconciliation.

Donald Tosh joined the Doctor Who production team as Script Editor (then titled Story Editor) in 1965. He and John Wiles faced the formidable task of taking over from Verity Lambert and building on the success she had made the series. Thrown in ‘at the deep end’, Donald found himself faced with a cast under pressure as William Hartnell’s health deteriorated and his performance suffered. Despite these problems, Donald supervised some memorable stories including Galaxy 4 and The Dalek’s Master Plan. He was also the first to consider ways of writing William out of the series…

Ten-channel installation. Videos capture people of different ages and identities singing the song, 'Happy Birthday,' in different styles. Each video shows the close-up of the face while singing. The scenes switch between solo singing and singing in unison, and ends with an elegant and standard children's choir.

Eight-channel installation. Shows a waltz-dancing scene recorded simultaneously with 8 camcorders, taken from 8 different angles in a ballroom (Set A); and clips from Revolutionary songs from the 1970s and popular music of the 1990s (Set B).

Angstel is a film-performance. The character was born one boring afternoon. He embodied the energy we had to spare, as much as he embodied our inability to take action. A manifesto of the limits to be overcome, Angstel was constructed through a series of disorganized performances in public spaces, culminating in a written and staged performance (which was ultimately lost).

A woman recalls a special event from her childhood, when she sat at the dining room table in her home, enjoying a rather unusual and repetitive feast. It included the usual mashed potatoes, guava juice, and Dad's mysterious and intriguing cup of tea.
