Cigar

The opening scene in Cigar invites us into an air-conditioned office somewhere in the world. With all the delicate and smooth gestures of a connoisseur, a middle-aged man in a suit takes an expensive cigar out of a long, silver holder in a black leather case. Using the small guillotine of a cigar cutter, he carefully prepares it to be enjoyed. He gives it to his visitor and helps him light it. Their hands touch each other gently, the cigar is lit. With a nearly obscene concentrated enjoyment, the visitor smokes away in a sofa while the other man looks at him intensely. Despite the fact that the men in Annika Larsson’s works in many ways are caricatures of the typical Western male as a symbol of power, it would be wrong to say that she examines or critiques male power. It is more the peculiar erotic tension in apparently banal tasks that is important here.

Vienna Suite

During a stay in Vienna, Hafif was stuck by store window mannequins, which fascinated her with their highly artificial quality. The discovery inspired her to create a series of photographs of the figures. Standing in the street, the artist captured them in their ‘natural habitat,’ which is to say, behind a pane of glass. Folding the surrounding scene into the pictures, the reflections in the windows refract our gaze at the figures. On a semiotic level, urban architecture and the female body blend into each other. To expand this photographic series into the film Vienna Suite, Hafif resorted to a very basic device: she recorded the photographs with a static video camera and edited the footage to produce a sequence of ‘scenes.’

Woland from Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, the guide at the Bulgakov Museum, little Mikhail on his own, and his nanny, united in a single narrative in this experimental documentary inspired by the biography of the writer. To approach this mysterious oeuvre the film combines the uncombinable. Re-enactments at Bulgakov’s house in the Podil neighbourhood are met with excerpts from films by Griffith, Lubitsch and Duvivier. The heady mix of storytelling techniques makes this film a hypnotising dream, confounding like the work of the writer himself.

I'm a Pilot Like You

I'M A PILOT LIKE YOU was shot July, 1999 inside and outside 20 North Moore Street where John and Carolyn Kennedy lived. Ruth Hardinger, a sculptor, is a 1st floor resident in this building and was unwittingly trapped by the media frenzy and the public attention that unfolded on the sidewalk in front of the building after the Kennedy plane crashed off Martha's Vineyard. Bill Brand, a nearby neighbor and experimental filmmaker, collaborated to make a video that gives a unique view from inside the building, looking back at the spectacle created by the public and the media. It shows what it felt like to be on the other side of the story.

Confluence

A complex editing score is applied to images and sounds gathered by a video camera moving through crowded places: a market in Cairo, a carnival in St. Louis, commuters in Tokyo and a funeral in Benares. The unique edit-form of Confluence weaves these streams of movement together like notes in a musical score. Events are broken loose from their normal flow and organized into autonomous clusters. The gigantic monument represents an atomic lattice of iron crystals, magnified one hundred sixty-five billion times. In Fourth Axis, camera moves inside the actual structure cause a virtual nanoskeleton to grow, bringing the Atomium’s three-dimensional elements into a new alignment along an infinite vector.

“No Show” begins with the premise that a performance has been scheduled, the stage is set with props and costumes, the audience has gathered and is seated and waiting, but the actors are a no show. What might happen when someone from the audience approaches the stage and discovers all that awaits. Masterful mayhem? Perhaps. Imagine one’s first attempt at riding a unicycle, the discovery of theatrical masks, juggling clubs, and a sousaphone. Can one really keep rhythm juggling shakers while playing classical music on harmonica?

De Doble Filo

In the video De Doble Filo, Clemencia Echeverri highlights the intensity of catastrophes brought about by human beings‘ destructive capacity, which is akin to the power of natural forces. However, the momentum of the devastation generated by human groups and individuals assumes increasing proportions and does not seem to follow cycles of alternating construction and destruction. The image of the woman that unceasingly draws house after house, knowing that those will be razed an equal number of times by a rust-colored torrent of water, suggests as well the destruction of the family’s web, of the nucleus of larger communities.

Gille a Pont

We are in the North of France. The town of Binche, in Belgium, is not far away. It is considered the capital of the gilles, the jesters of the North of France. That tradition dates back to the last century. It was so popular that it eventually became widespread. Once during a carnival, some gilles appeared on this side of the border, in Pont-sur-Sambre. The story of the gilles of Pont started very humbly at Alain and Josiane’s, who run a garage. Their passion for the gilles led them to create a non-profit organization that welcomes unemployed or employed workers, mothers and people on welfare. They gather together all through the year to play gille and communicate to those who watch them marching, their joy of dancing and singing to the rhythm of drums and brass.
