In the summer of 1999, in a mountain gorge town in Yamanashi prefecture, I was holding a movie camera Bolex loaded with 16mm film.

In Tunisia, the history of stambali goes back to the arrival of the first enslaved Africans from Mali, Timbuktu specifically. Practicing their music and worship in the house of their masters, the enslaved and their musical traditions survive to this day. Stambali is a religious ritual in Tunisia, a journey with the rhythm of the "gombri" and "chkackek," traces an individual and collective hypnosis, an annual tribute that the disciples of Sidi Saad pay to their master during an initiatory journey and rite of purification that lasts three days. In "Stambali," the camera, video and film follow the rhythm of the possession, dances, and goes into a trance, in the cemetery, in an open space of grass, trees, dust and sand, in the eroticism that is released by this physical and spiritual representation.

WALK / DON'T WALK / WALK. The rhythm of the nineties. A tribute to the vital New York drag scene and the "electronic" 90's that is also a remembrance of the Christopher Street queer revolt 30 years ago.

One day, a son of a king went for a ride in the woods. He fell asleep and didn’t notice he was deep in the forest, where the iron wolf lives. The angry roar and the gnashing of steel jaws awakened him, and he broke into a run to save himself from the dreadful monster.

The second part of the video series Man with balls on hands and feet, also including Man on air (2001) and Man on ice (1998). Man with balls on hands and feet is the name of the video series containing three films. The two first, Man on ice (1998) and Man on water (1999) shows a man venturing on the physical contradictory; to stand straight up on an ice or a water surface, with balls attached to hands and feet. In the third, Man on air (2001), the support obtained by friction is altered with a heavy stream of air. Through this very simple and obviously impossible combination of hard, spherical forms contradicting the ice, the water and the air stream, an excruciating yet human situation is stressed.

"Exteriors" is a portrait of a young woman and the landscape she inhabits. It is about the walls people construct, real or imaginary. "Poignant and poetic, the work engages our notions of the 'moving image.'" - Photophobia Film Festival 2000

"You would make a good lawyer" is a film about employment, and the cages we all inhabit. The title is taken from a fortune that I kept receiving from fortune cookies, which seemed to capture the irony of my predicament perfectly. (JB)

Into an empty movie theater comes a single spectator, a box of popcorn in hand. He tries various seats before settling down near the front. The movie starts. In comes a couple who sit down right next to the chap with the popcorn, even though every other seat in the theater is empty.

Omelechko and his family, which counted a couple of dozen people, have a fun life. There is a wife, parents and a couple of aunts and uncles, and the girls and the lads, and feast fans who came from nowhere. Everyone has their own character and a short story to introduce with songs and dances to the viewers.

For the first time ever, and for during several weeks, the coroner's department (Los Angeles' forensic department), opened up the doors of its autopsy rooms. The USA forensic scientist, much popularised by Dr Scarpetta's investigations in the books by Patricia Cornwell, is totally independent from the law and from the police and is, therefore, eminently credible and respected. Patrick Bourrat and Jean-Michel Destang followed the 'death detectives', otherwise known as the coroner's investigators, at work in the city's streets. They filmed the autopsies of victims of a violent death, the starting point for any criminal investigation. Los Angeles' coroner, made famous by his autopsies on Marilyn Monroe, Robert Kennedy and Nicole Brown, girlfriend to O.J. Simpson, is the best witness to urban violence. Nearly 1600 of the murder victims, that passed through the L.A.'s coroner's hands last year, were minors, often gang members.

After the bri(n)s and the threads of images, come these fragments, of various shapes, mostly circular, flared or full, with various inclusions, and threads leading back to a more abstract original rhythm. The editing was done directly in the optical printer. The views that I have appropriated are once again found footage chosen according to my convictions: there is thus a certain derision in weaving and interweaving these faces of anonymous and serious men with these youthful and blissful communicants, whose naivety escapes no one. I hope, as I wished, that each image is in itself a painting, on which it is not incongruous to stop for a few quarters of a second.

In the dark winter of 1995, Linda Giles, a Victoria-based installation artist, had a show at the old XChanges Gallery on North Park Street, in Vancouver. Before the show came down, Suzy Raxlen donned her black tutu and inked her sensitive hands with the printers ink that she plied in her trade as a master printer. She moved through the gallery of white veils, acting out a minimalist dance of thwarted desire, repression and frustration...

At age 29, Eric Rudolph was the perpetrator of the Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, which occurred on July 27, 1996, during the 1996 Summer Olympics. He called the police, warning about the bomb before it detonated. The blast killed spectator Alice Hawthorne and wounded 111 others. Law enforcement officials implement one of the largest manhunts in US history in their search for bomber Eric Rudolph. Host WRAL News anchor Jim Payne and the WRAL Documentary unit travel to western NC for a look inside the investigation, the impact of the search on the local community and the various fringe groups that might sympathize with the fugitive. “Into These Hills” originally aired April 24, 1999.
