Coming Out In Rural America

Interviews with teenagers and people in their early 20's who have come out in their small, rural Nebraska hometowns. They have faced prejudice and negative stereotypes as they revealed their sexual orientation to family and friends, and although some of them receive family support, their small town environment poses unique challenges that many urban gays do not face.

Edited from video diary footages shot in one day. Divided into two parts, the first part is shot mostly in blue tone, featuring everyday activities of waking up, going to the bathroom, and hanging a mirror. The second part, shot mostly in yellow, depicts compulsive eating, illustrating both the obsession of the body and the desire to escape from it.

White Ninja, Black Death

Dad & Me

Linda Västrik's personal documentary about her father who has been unwilling for most of her life to remain in contact, and suggests there may be a chance that she is not his biological daughter. This prompts Linda to insist on a DNA test, which sets in motion a frustrating process of connecting with her elusive father, and convincing him of the importance of such a test.

My sister Pei-ling went through with an unexpected pregnancy. The child was nicknamed Angoo. In three years, Pei-ling broke up with the child's father, met a new boyfriend, left Angoo in my parents’ care to move in with her boyfriend, until she finally moved back in with our family due to the disapproval of her boyfriend's brother. The parent-daughter relationship was strained at first, but gradually things changed; understanding and love returned between them.

It's a Jackie Thing

Based on his own video documentation, Atlas constructs a delirious montage of New York club performances from the late 1990s. Impersonators of pop-culture figures, including Martha Graham, Kurt Cobain giving a "final performance," and Sid Vicious lip-syncing to Nancy Sinatra, are emceed by two matronly (and bitingly sarcastic) upper-crust women. Featuring legendary drag, transgender, and queer artists, It's a Jackie Thing celebrates the flexibility of performance art's boundaries: "high" and "low" culture, "good" and "bad" taste, amateurism and professionalism, and, ultimately, gender and identity.

Nero Inferno is a significant documentary which explores the 90s Milan trainbombing scene. It successfully captures some of the raw emotions of northern Italy’s underground bombing universe, collecting rare footage, photos and interviews which include writers like Bread, Rae, MastroK, Spice, Dumbo. Great sound bites from these guys, who wanted to raise their voices upon the grey murmur of the big ciy. The film shows also some action, showcasing the street bombing missions in the subway of Milan. It’s an essential video for those who were there and who was not and anyone who don’t want to forget the historical memory of a movement.

Stambali

In Tunisia, the history of stambali goes back to the arrival of the first enslaved Africans from Mali, Timbuktu specifically. Practicing their music and worship in the house of their masters, the enslaved and their musical traditions survive to this day. Stambali is a religious ritual in Tunisia, a journey with the rhythm of the "gombri" and "chkackek," traces an individual and collective hypnosis, an annual tribute that the disciples of Sidi Saad pay to their master during an initiatory journey and rite of purification that lasts three days. In "Stambali," the camera, video and film follow the rhythm of the possession, dances, and goes into a trance, in the cemetery, in an open space of grass, trees, dust and sand, in the eroticism that is released by this physical and spiritual representation.

Man With Balls On Hands and Feet - Man on Water

The second part of the video series Man with balls on hands and feet, also including Man on air (2001) and Man on ice (1998). Man with balls on hands and feet is the name of the video series containing three films. The two first, Man on ice (1998) and Man on water (1999) shows a man venturing on the physical contradictory; to stand straight up on an ice or a water surface, with balls attached to hands and feet. In the third, Man on air (2001), the support obtained by friction is altered with a heavy stream of air. Through this very simple and obviously impossible combination of hard, spherical forms contradicting the ice, the water and the air stream, an excruciating yet human situation is stressed.
