In the 1950’s the United States government restricted a 6 by 10 mile block of land somewhere north of Las Vegas. Although the government will not discuss this top secret facility, it has been consistently associated with UFO sightings and conspiracy stories. The reasons for the cover up of alien activity is unclear, but one thing is for sure, the government will do everything in their power to stop the public from knowing the truth. The most probable explanation is that mass panic would ensue if the public knew we were being visited by beings far superior to ourselves. In 1999, TGR exposes AREA 51, a 16mm jib flick that shows skiing’s new generation going bigger than ever and pulling the sickest tricks imaginable. Twelve skits in six minutes: the first one and the final three are about sex, in between are sketches of blood, death, murder, truck crashes, a tough day on the toilet, a slip on a banana peel, and an omnivorous Elvis. In several vignettes, Plympton draws on the essentially comic image of men wearing jackets and ties in a world gone awry. Women, who don't appear all that often, cheerfully participate in the sex and don't hang around for the violence.

In this work, Shiota expressed “the memory of her skin, which cannot be entirely wiped away even after washing,” while covering herself with mud in her own bathtub. In the third year after she started living in Germany, Shiota became sharply aware of her own skin, arguably a symbol of her own identity. This was the first work where she made a video version of a performance. It also resonates with her 1997 performance piece, “Try and Go Home.”

Stravaig / Errance

An experimental portrait of a place, Scotland. You are looking for something. What you find is something else. "Stravaig / Errance" (Gaelic for wandering) is techno tourism of a personal nature. Forrest visits a Scotland that only she may show us. The artist is an informed tourist with a curious eye. The viewer is lead, but there is no sense that the artist holds to a definitive way to see/record. Travelogues are referenced in "Stravaig," but their form is never embraced. This is not tourism, but memory and sense. Forrest looks beyond the architecture and must see sights of the place(s) to unearth an ethereal essence of space/time.

Handy Man is part of a trilogy of works exploring one of the principle metaphors of video: the window.

The Age of Nabokov

Leonid Parfenov's program “Nabokov's Century” is dedicated to the centenary of the great Russian and American classic. These are, first of all, the stories of people who knew the writer closely: Elena Vladimirovna Nabokova-Sikorskaya - “the favorite sister of the favorite brother”, as Vladimir Vladimirovich called her, and Nabokov's son Dmitry Vladimirovich. Nabokov, who became a genius of two languages and two literatures, is an exceptional case. The film crew visited America, where Nabokov, an American professor of Russian literature, taught at Cornell University for a long time. The viewer will also see the St. Petersburg mansion and the house in Rozhdestvensko estate, where the happy childhood of the future writer took place, his apartment in the hotel in the Swiss town of Montreux, where Nabokov lived the last sixteen years of his life.
