Inspired by the open creativity and free-association of children, extreme close-ups of quotidian objects, distorted “synchronous” sounds, and floating text intermesh to convey the fluctuation between security and danger, confidence and doubt when a child falls ill.

A healer on healing, medicine & religion...Filmed in the modern city of Caracas, capital of Venezuela, Uncle Poison is an intimate portrait of a traditional faith healer, set against the backdrop of his community's Easter celebrations. Every day, Benito Reyes receives people at his house looking for all sorts of cures. Through his own testimony, this documentary looks at the healer's role as mediator between the social, natural and spiritual worlds. Curing someone or harvesting medicinal leaves, he must first seek permission from the plants he uses and from a variety of Saints. Like some plants and spirits, Benito has the power to extract the sickness and spells from his patients. A conjunction of sacred and profane, celebrating and mourning, Easter provides a rare opportunity to look at traditional faith healing in a wider social and religious context.

A psychological drama filmed when I was fond of Japanese detective stories. The monologue of a killer with a shovel inspired by real maniacs, from Tsutomu Miyazaki to Seito Sakekibara. It's part of my series of films that have dissected the cinema screen, like Zetcho and Rabbit Hunting. At the time I was more aware of cinema rather than film itself, so my taste for the widescreen format was idle at times. After all, I experienced firsthand how difficult it was to produce a Cinemascope projection with an 8mm projector. All I knew was that in the 1980s, director Akira Fujiwara had shot martial arts films in cinemascope with 8mm film.

Sueoka is an artist who creates new works with found footage, and develops the film stock himself. In this work, he uses The Wizard of Oz. By repeating the famous musical number “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” over and over, it deconstructs standard narrative style and shifts to a different mode of filmic experience.

This film was inspired by a surrealist poem composed by Henri Michaux. The sombre and austere decor represents an arid mentality, in the midst of which a living creature is continually transforming itself, reinventing itself, being reborn ... and resisting its overwhelming surroundings. This process is conveyed by a fluctuating means of displacement, which changes from shot to shot.
