Film ist. 1-6 is an avant-garde collage from Gustav Deutsch, using found footage from various scientific films to explore the properties, impact and nature of film.

The title does not refer to the American state, but to a cheap wine brand that flows liberally in this documentary. Socially, things look bad for the inhabitants of the Polish village Zagórki since the state farm they worked on went bankrupt a few years ago. It happened in 1990; since then, the 750,000-acre estate looks deserted and the former farm workers and cattle drivers are sitting at home, musing on the old days and complaining about the grievous wrongs suffered by them. From a flourishing, thriving community, the village is now reduced to a sad lot of embittered people, whose sole income is a small allowance and whose sole distraction is the muddled intoxication of the cheap Arizona wine. The camera mercilessly registers the dismal condition of the houses and streets, and the numerous candid interviews supply a poignant image of the blind-alley situation in this remote village.

You can see the woman sitting still and the landscape in turn. In this film, the character is not the heroine, and is equated with the landscape. As the subject is equated with the existence of a film too, the difference of time each having is presented in this film.

Photographic realist Chuck Close gets an up-close-and-personal treatment in this documentary that discusses Close's artistic vision and method, as well as his "close call" recovery from a spinal blood clot that almost ended his career. After suffering a debilitating seizure, Close -- the creator of groundbreaking, oversized portraits -- overcame his paralysis and continued his art. Avant-garde composer Philip Glass provides the soundtrack.

By Kwame Braun. Color, 24 mins, 1998. From distributor Documentary Educational Resources: At a street festival in West Africa, a young girl is delighted to discover a video camera trained on her. But her exuberant display is quickly cut short when she recognizes that the cameraman has already lost interest in her. But all is well: he has a document of the moment. Video has tipped the balance in another human interaction, and turned it into a curio. This experimental video essay probes the complexities of video as a tool for cross-cultural research and representation: it examines, in effect, the politics of its own production. How does the intrusion of this expensive technology distort relationships? What are the ethnographic filmmaker's responsibilites towards his "subjects?" Yet perhaps these concerns are themselves distortions, preoccupations that obscure a more balanced encounter, in which human accommodation can flow in both directions.

At the end of 1996 in an old shop in Vienna specialising in film materials I found a tin with indeterminable pieces of 16mm film showing much wear and tear. They dated from the late 60s. After a cursory glance I thought 'yes'. The found footage material was ideal for the horror series. Corridor is the 5th film in the horror series "Black Garden‘ along with The Murder Mystery (1987/92), Blicklust (1992), Party (1995), Macumba (1995/96).

A menacing man with a history of gay-bashing enters a smoky bar and strikes up a conversation with a drag queen in this dark short by Fraser MacDonald, which explores violence, homophobia and masculinity.

The result of a series of camera-less collaborations between the filmmaker, the Atlantic Ocean, and a crab trap. For three days in January and three days in October of 1997, and again, for a day, in August of 1998, lengths of unexposed, undeveloped film were soaked in a crab cage on a South Carolina beach. Both the sound and image are the result of the ensuing oceanic inscriptions written directly into the emulsion of the film as it was buffeted by the salt water, sand, rocks and shells.

This gorgeous film uses Paul Nipkow's disc as a rotary shutter inside a super-8 camera. Sequences were shot out the filmmaker's window and then blown up to 16mm. Positive and negative images change throughout the film by dissolving them and by enlarging the blow up.

In the beginning there was a hand, and this hand drew other hands, then shoulders, heads, legs and finally, the animator himself. Inspired by a wide range of works of art and styles of illustration, this is a film which is constantly reinventing itself in one continual motion - after all, to draw a "still life" would be like creating an image without life.
