This documentary, filmed in the Venezuelan plains of Barinas and Apure, narrates the life, beliefs and customs of the "Carrao de Palmarito", the greatest exponent of the folk music of that region and symbol of the resistance of a culture threatened with extinction due to the wrong name globalization.

Fatehpur Sikri - Akbar’s Vision in Stone

Created in 1571 by Akbar, the greatest of the Mughal Emperors, Fatehpur Sikri, laid the foundations of a culture whose impact still reverberates in North India. His free thinking, open minded and innovative attitude is expressed in the design of the main mosque, in the innovative roofscapes, and in the unique composition of the palace complex, based on a delicate system of a series of balancing axes. Exquisite Miniature paintings from the imperial atelier evoke the court and the events linked to the creation of Fatehpur Sikri. Three Hindustani classical ragas, which are said to have been composed by Tansen, the legendary ” jewel ” of Akbar’s court, go with the images.

Pavel and Lyalya (A Jerusalem Romance)

“Like the right and left hand Your soul is close to my soul We are sealed shut, blissfully and warmly, Like the right and left wing…” The life and art of Pavel Kogan and Lyudmila Stanukinas, two famous Leningrad documentary filmmakers, can best be expressed by the Tsvetaeva stanza cited above. They are the main characters of this film, which their student Viktor Kossakovsky shot during Pavel Kogan’s final months. For Lyudmila Stanukinas, Lyalya, as those close to her called her, her husband was her only reason for existence. She was with him until the end and held onto his extinguishing life as much as she could.

Float

The installation "Float" consists of a video projection and a sculpture with an extra. The video shows how an expressionless man and woman, lying on their stomachs in an indefinable space (grey floor, brick walls), are tossed up and down in an unremitting rhythm, as though they lay in a cart rolling over a bumpy road at high speed. For the viewer, the repeated and fundamentally physically unpleasant experience gradually gives way to acceptance of the situation, through which the up and down movements even begin to assume a calming quality. The sculpture in the same space in Bureau Amsterdam, into which an extra is introduced, continues the horizontal structure of the video, but is opposite in character: apparently tranquil, but rumbling in the underbelly.

Hydromancy

Hydromancy is the act of searching for water with a dowsing rod. This dance film is the abstract expression searching and finding the "oceanic feeling", a term from Carl Jung to describe those moments when we experience an intense connectedness with the universe (e.g. artistic inspiration). The film was shot on Super-8 and 16 mm, and entirely optically printed (re-filmed frame by frame) to create all the movements and special effects.

Jazz Slave Ships

Jazz Slave Ships was a site-specific performance collaboration between Vancouver artist Jan Wade and London-based performer Vanessa Richards that involved the creation of an ancestral altar. It took place in two U.K. ports in October 1996: on the West Coast in Whitehaven, Cumbria (the last English slaving port), in an 18th century bonded warehouse used to store liquor and guns used in the slave trade; and on the East Coast in Hull, Yorkshire in Wilberforce House, the birthplace of the anti-slavery pioneer William Wilberforce and now a museum of anti-slavery. The production took place over a 3-week period that began Sept. 30, 1996.
