In the Wake of Our Ancestors follows a group of dedicated Hawaiians, who embark on a journey to rediscover their past by building a voyaging canoe out of traditional natural materials. An extensive search fails to produce koa trees large enough for the hulls. The once plentiful forests on the island of Hawai’i have been depleted, and the unique koa ecosystem virtually destroyed. Native Alaskans offer them two enormous Sitka spruce trees. After a dramatic tree felling ceremony in the forests of Southeast Alaska, the logs arrive in Hawai‘i, and builders begin shaping the canoe’s hulls. The generous gift from the Tlingit and Haida Indians of Southeast Alaska brings new hope for the canoe project and leads to discovery of strong cultural connections. This story of an indigenous people’s frustrated search for trees that are endemic to their islands represents a microcosm of the threats facing diminishing native cultures and natural environments in the modern world.

In Passenger, Robert Gardner made what he calls “an observation in four movements.” The intent of the piece is to impart an experience of the engagement by Sean Scully with the work in question, an engagement which is both physical and emotional. The only sounds are those made by the artist as he works and, occasionally, musical passages from tapes Scully listens to while he is painting.

Clarence Fitch was a man of and for his times, an African American who witnessed and took part in the social movements of this country from the turmoil of the sixties through the present decade. Telling a story fraught with both heroism and tragedy, the film situates Vietnam vet Clarence Fitch's life within the context of a remarkable range of issues--racism, the Black civil rights movement, the Vietnam War and its aftermath, the scourge of drugs, and finally the AIDS crisis. ANOTHER BROTHER both honors Clarence Fitch and digs deeply into the roots of his struggles.

Three women seek pleasure and the beyond in parallel universes, which never quite intersect. When one finds another, she is either buried in the sand or asleep under a tree. The film documents a small event situated on the Idroscala di Ostia, close to the place where Pier Paolo Pasolini was murdered on the night of November 2, 1975. A vandalised concrete sculpture now commemorates the spot where Pasolini died a few hundred yards away from the mouth of the Tiber.

This extraordinary film explores the twilight world of India's eunuchs who both exploit and bewail their ill-defined status within society. The eunuchs introduce a special world, where for them divinity and daily life alternate in the flash of an exquisitely made-up eye. A 3,600-strong ancient sect who claim to be descended from the gods live in relative luxury. Other Indian men explain why they too underwent painful castration.

The performances of the actors, who are by no means the best, are humorous and tasteful, and their individual atmospheres are brought to life, perhaps due to the fact that they have made two films with almost the same cast. Daisuke Fukuhara, who plays Fukuhara, gives a particularly good, natural performance as a man who is completely off his rocker. There is also a distinctive sense of rhythm in the time-lapse explanations that connect the short shots, making this film unique in that it is somehow stylish and at the same time funny.

The Brighton Beach-Coney Island boardwalk is a long, winding, ocean front walkway adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. Photographed over a three year period, the landscape rendered reflects the seasonal changes, daily activities and the filmmaker's projected future.

METRONOME is both the most straightforward (as well as the most difficult) of Stephanie Barber's films. It is very dear to the filmmaker's heart. The soundtrack of a radio play is off-set by the intractable images of "spaces." The former seems to balance precariously between kitsch and true heart-rending emotion and the latter references the asceticism of seventies minimalism (in experimental film) with the impenetrable intellectualism becoming increasingly moving as the film progresses. The marriage of these two elements is an odd tension: the tale of the play, the threat of limb extraction, asks the necessity of "whole and what the elements are which compose complete."

Incarcerated sex offenders explain and demonstrate the kinds of deception they used to deflect accusations of sexual abuse, often for decades, before finally being caught. In addition, the sex offenders discuss how they set up and lived a double life, posing in public as kind and responsible members of the community while raping and molesting in private. Five vignettes are included of sex offenders who were either in pretreatment or treatment phases of an incarcerated sex offender treatment program. The videotape can be used to educate parents, teachers, therapists, prosecutors, judges, mental health workers, and others who are concerned about child sexual abuse.
