Beltane

Edinburgh’s Beltane fire festival is the spectacular recreation of a pagan celebration. Crowds of thousands watch the procession around Calton Hill, in the heart of the city, held annually on the eve of May Day. I didn’t get enough material at the first attempt so I went back the following year when I was more competent with the camera and less shy. It is a simplified, partial record of the event, squeezed into a 6 minute impression. This reworking echoes the reimagination of the ancient ritual. The film is a reconstruction of a reconstruction.

National Geographic's Africa: Wilds of Madagascar

Just off the East coast of Africa, Madagascar is an island unique in all the world. Separated from the mainland some 165 million years ago, Madagascar's flora and fauna have evolved in near isolation. Join a team of naturalists as they trek to the island's isolated Ankarana plateau to study the exotic animals of this forbidding wildlife oasis. Through enormous underground passages, you'll hike to a sunken forest, sighting unique creatures such as the crowned lemur, the leaf-tailed gecko, and the souimanga sunbird in AFRICA: WILDS OF MADAGASCAR.

Suspension

Suspension is an early piece from 1997, my first solo video work investigating media imagery. 100 still images of various models and celebrities taken from magazines were videotaped at fixed intervals. This material was then distorted and broken down through a process of recording and re-recording, gradually corrupting the analog signal and causing the images to become interwoven and unstable. With an original score improvised in real time by Jason Kleidosty during the final pass of image processing.

A documentary in four chapters on the life of Brett Shapiro, Jew, writer, homosexual. Each chapter alternates Shapiro's life with interventions by artists, intellectuals and psychologists on four different themes: identity, the origin of writing, normality, non-traditional families.

Station 25

The author continues with her main themes: the relationship between man and woman, the intrusion of the mythical into the rituals of everyday life. This video uses many electronic image processing options. Most fascinating are the scenes with "morphing" (electronic transformation), in which the character on the canvas is transformed into an identical figure on the video surface, or the latter "freezes" into a character in a still image. Once again, the author insists on a real natural environment, which deforms it and thus equates it with the artificiality of the video image.

Abc

"ABC" consists of four objects: two bureaucratic looking chairs, one 27" TV monitor and a two meter long metallic table. The chairs are placed at the shorter ends of the table. While one chair is emptied by it's interlocutor, the other is occupied by a large TV monitor. The eleven minute long video displays three close up images of the mouth that in a deliberately exaggerated manner pronounce three uncanny stories.

One Filipino and three Chinese families and their gay & lesbian children engage in dialogue about shame, grief, love, growth, living with HIV/AIDS, the acceptance of homosexuality by family members, & the cultural perceptions of homosexuality. The Gay Asian Pacific Alliance in San Francisco awarded this documentary with the 1997 George Choy Memorial Award.

The idea for "BOOKCASE" came out of my desire to educate myself by creating a catalogue of film techniques. I was attempting to distill the elements of film to a pure state by stripping away any meaning from the images, to explore film as simply the masking and filtering of light. For subject matter I shot things which had, at one time or another, struck a chord within me. In doing so, I realized that I was also creating a catalogue of my own memories. I have always seen memories as discreet units of light, not unlike books on a shelf... "BOOKCASE" became not only an experiment in "pure" film, but a reflection on the concept of memory as well. In the convergence of these two ideas, light is the common basic element. (TS)

When Democracy Works

It presents three case studies of the democratic right: racist David Duke's electoral bids in Louisiana; the struggle over homophobic Amendment 2 in Colorado, which was ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in May 1996; and the scapegoating of immigrants, people of color, and women through Proposition 187 and Proposition 209 in California. In each case, When Democracy Works highlights the work of progressive grassroots organizers to thwart the radical right and uphold democratic values.

Weaving the Future

Weaving the Future is a video portrait of a unique indigenous community living in the Andean highlands of northern Ecuador. The story of the Otavalo Indians is not a stereotypical tale of "isolated people struggling to survive." Just the opposite. The people of Otavalo have successfully adapted their traditions of weaving and crafts to the international marketplace. Selling their textiles in the U.S., Europe and even in Japan, the Otavalos are by any measure the most prosperous Native people in South America. Theirs is a fascinating story of economic success and social change.

A central figure in the lives of Moroccan women, the "neggaffa" accompanies all beauty rituals. She is an accomplished artist, a creator of living, ephemeral tableaux. Hajja Khadifa, mistress of the "neggaffates" of Casablanca, and her aunt Fanida share some of their knowledge with us.
