In FUORI/OUTSIDE the video maker, an American woman of African and Italian descent, examines her relationship with her Italian American grandmother. The lives of the two women are inextricably linked to local geographies; family stories embedded in the walls of tenement buildings and suburban landscapes. Personal memories overflow into public spaces, contradictions around race within the family are contextualized within larger conflicts between Italian Americans and African Americans. The foundation of FUORI/OUTSIDE is the powerful bond between the two women, marginalized by color and age, that survives the instability of family, class and ethnic identity.

Barney's Good Day, Good Night

Barney and the kids are playing outside on a beautiful sunny day in the playground. Robert tells Barney that he has always wanted to be able to stay up all night long just to see what happens at nighttime. The kids are in for some nighttime fun during the day with the help of Barney's special "Night Timer". When the lights go down, they all imagine that it is nighttime and get ready for bed by taking a bath, putting on their pajamas, and brushing their teeth. Barney teaches the kids that there are some unusual sights and sounds associated with nighttime. After singing some of their favorite "nighttime" songs, the stars begin to fade and before they know it, the morning sun is shining once again.

The first video, captured with a stationary camera, depicts the floating and sinking movement of a balloon; the second video moves in conjunction with the legs of the person carrying the balloon; the third video is in black and white and captures the vision through a surveillance camera attached to the hand of the person carrying the balloon.

Politics from a Black Woman's Insides

Follow one woman's search for the Hottentot Venus, the legendary link between ape and human and icon of black female subjectivity. Edwards's film explores the construction of race through both scientific discourse on the body (as a body is graphically exposed for the camera by a forensic pathologist) and personal narratives by women who have struggled with the health care system.

Three-channel installation. Videos capture the process of a person eating from 3 different angles simultaneously. One stationary camera shows a close-up of the person's chin; another stationary camera zooms in on the food container in color; lastly, a black-and-white surveillance camera is attached to the person's hand, recording the eating process in motion by moving between the mouth and the food container.

This single-channel installation alternates between 20 seconds of images capturing private activities and expressions of people in front of the mirror in washrooms and 10 seconds of black screen. (Installation is intended to be viewed in a venue with walls covered in wallpaper and a video screen hidden behind a double-sided mirror on one of the walls. The reflection of the viewer's face will appear on the mirror whenever the video is faded into a black screen.)

A Little Present (For My Friend Columbus the Explorer)

While referencing the explorer Christopher Columbus, the film is actually a gift for filmmaker Stephanie Barber's friend, the performance artist Theresa Columbus. The short imagistic film is suggesting (or questioning) ever so gently the effects (both positive and negative) that exploring has on that which is being explored. Our most well known Columbus, now so often vilified, here stands in for a more psychological and artistic exploration and the fall out that can occur from that sort of expansionism as well. Like many of Barber's films, the piece itself works almost separately from the implications and sidelong glances of the title and the way it interacts with the (almost passive) images and (often quite dominant) soundtrack.
