Maybe Never (But I'm Counting the Days)

Maybe Never restages both a multitude of narratives about the loss of innocence and the changing nature of sexual fantasy and activity in the age of AIDS. While the question of Asian American identity is never specifically addressed, Nguyen's casting of Asian Americans as the objects of desire, the creators of fantasy and the participants in erotic exchanges with one another produces a distinctive aesthetic which firmly incorporates Asian American bodies, perspectives and imaginations within a contemporary sexual landscape of risk, desire, regret and creativity.

The Body Remembers

The footage was collected at AIDS fundraisers held at the time in Vancouver East Side, Canada from 1994 to 1996. The Body Remembers chronicles Francisco Ibanez-Carrasco's struggle to make drag into a form of artesania (not art) that heals. Drag allows us to present our damaged selves to others when we are disfigured and ugly by conventional standards. Ibanez-Carrasco struggled with Kaposi's Sarcoma and other AIDS-related opportunistic infections at that time and drag shows were a way to bring his extended family around him and to create awareness about AIDS.

The Forgotten Hunting Dance

In a Truku community in Hualien, students of a local elementary school were rehearsing for the upcoming sports day. The most challenging show––the 'Hunting Dance'––fell on the shoulders of grade one and grade two students. The ancient tunes and dance moves were passed down from elderly women of the community . Filmmaker and school teacher YANG Ming-hui (Umin Howa) captured the practices along with his regrets at how many of the Truku traditions were being forgotten.

The Forgotten Women

The film is a documentary about Angola. It tells of the heavy cost of war to women. After ten years of struggle for independence, the war in Angola had continued for another twenty years. The film explores the motives of the combatants, including Cuba and South Africa's apartheid government. In this film, Folly lets women tell their own stories. She shows the women from mid- or close-range, forcing the viewer to focus on their faces rather than their bodies or surroundings, and takes the time to let them say what they have to say, giving a unique women's perspective of the conflict. Folly participates in the film through her voice-over, giving a subjective element. She admits that she is not familiar with Angola, and certainly is not an authority. The film thus becomes a record of Folly's own journey of discovery.
