It offers insight into the symbolic and religious meaning of thangkas and their importance for Tibetan Buddhist life.

Fashions is a twelve-and-a-half-minute film showing one hundred outfits displayed on a female model. Ray improvised the clothes from odd remnants from a local fabric store, wrapping, taping and tying the fabric in place on the model. She stands on a circular revolving platform on a wooden floor next to a white wall. After each complete revolution, the film cuts abruptly to the next outfit. The model is the artist Frances Stark (born 1967), who was assisting Ray in his Los Angles studio at the time. [Overview courtesy of Tate]

Keepers of the Faith:The Buddhist Nuns of the Sagaing Hills

In the Sagaing Hills, 12 miles from the ancient capital of Mandalay are hundreds of pagodas, stupas, monasteries and nunneries which form a focal point of worship for Buddhism in Burma. In 1986 the filmmaker lived for 15 months as a nun in the Thameikdaw Gaung nunnery. Some years later she is coming back for a visit in order to see what has changed. This is an intimate insight into the daily life of a nunnery as well a portrait of the monastic economy and its interactions with the society.

The Red Paper

The Red Paper asserts a voice of power and interpretation recounting the devastating consequences of colonialism. The European male wears a straitjacket, repeatedly mumbling “I did not know, I did not know,” in a familiar contemporary mantra that pleads self-proclaimed absolution from guilt by reason of ignorance of history. Claxton irreverently and consciously opts for a lack of historical specificity in favour of a totalizing haunting by history in the present.

That Summer
