In this way, the concept of linear perspective we have had since the Renaissance is replaced by a new system of perspective, the ‘water-drop perspective-system'. Question: is this film a sort of two-dimensional virtual reality? Answer: no, virtual reality means that we construct our artificial world. I am much more interested in the surrounding real world. George Bush believes that the White House gates shield him, from you, your loss, and his responsibility for the AIDS crisis. Now it is time to bring AIDS home to George Bush. On October 11th, we will carry the actual ashes of people we love in funeral procession to the White House. In an act of grief and rage and love, we will deposit their ashes on the White House lawn. The Tape-Beatles: Matter

Taking its cue from our previous ‘expanded cinema’ work The Grand Delusion, Matter, too, uses a three-screen tryptych arrangement in the live presentation. Matter, however, uses the flanking loops a bit differently. Where the previous work created widescreen collage spectacles braced with symmetries and compositional nuance, Matter’s loops superimpose visual rhythms on top of the musical ones, emphasizing first the downbeat, then the accent, then perhaps falling between beats. Something like jazz, the effect is not lock-step, but rather a looser relationship between rhythm and melody, and in this case, the visuals are included in that formula.
