Critically- acclaimed as the first Macau people’s movie under the Portuguese Administration, “Ah Ming’s Macao” was a touching semi-autobiographical short film about the director who returned to his place of birth from the USA in 1994 to make his master’s graduation film. Through the process of seeking funding from the government and private organizations for this short film, Ah Ming encountered difficulties in the creative work. Through interviewing different walks of people in Macau, Ah Ming also understood their different expectations toward the return of Macao to China in 1999.

This short bittersweet video presents a series of daydreams (and nightmares) around the elusive and ubiquitous figure of Supermodel Linda Evangelista, lurking in the mind of an Asian American teenager on the verge of queerdom. Obsessional projections figure in scenarios like receiving obscene phone calls from Linda and impersonating Ms. E. on a Japanese talk show, interspersed between rehearsals of a coming out. The quintessential Supermodel, famous for changing her image radically from season to season, the Linda Phenomenon personifies the ideals of femininity in this culture and evokes the queer practice of passing from day to day. Backed by a soundtrack of French love songs sung by Vietnamese superstar-singer Thanh Lan, the tape poses questions about queer childhood narratives, cross-gender and cross-racial identification.

Surviving Memory

"Surviving Memory" is a film about the role of loss in the formation of identity. It is a narrative intercut with documentary fragments of political actions, which connect the various characters to event through collective memory. Through autobiographical spoken texts, the narrator relays fragments of a relationship between two Jewish women.

Nice Shoes Faggot is an eerie, evocative exploration of homophobic violence and its psychological effects. In August of 1989, Alain Brosseau, a waiter at the Chateau Laurier finished his shift and walked through Major’s Hill Park on his way to Hull. In the park he was chased, beaten, and then dropped head first off the Alexandria Bridge by a gang of teenagers. As they held him by his ankles off the side of the bridge, the last thing his murderers said was “I like your shoes."

A Hard Life

Kalliopi Kalogerou has spent her whole life in the Greek village of Ano Ravenia where she was born in 1900. Simple witness of the century, she lived through Turkish domination and successive occupations linked to different wars. Most of her family stays elsewhere, in Greece or abroad (USA, Canada, Germany, Bulgaria); her shattered family world is representative of the Greek diaspora. The film is exclusively devoted to her life story, told to a young Epirot friend, Eleni Pangratiou-Alexakis, and to her daughter, Evguenia, both of whom have settled in the States. The result is a rich, yet austere film where nothing distracts the viewer from the dialogue and the face of the storyteller. It also constitutes an ordinary yet important testimony on this long and painful page of Greek history (1900-1983).

Kae, Act Like A Girl

In Kae, Act Like A Girl, Idemitsu continues her experimental narrative exploration of women's roles in contemporary Japan with a tale of women's liberationist awakening. Here she presents a young female artist's conflict with the traditional, patriarchal expectations of women in Japanese culture, in which men are privileged and women are groomed to be wives and mothers. Within Idemitsu's narrative, video screens and images represent the protagonist's inner struggle — memories, conscience, familial pressure — as she subordinates and then ultimately achieves her personal and artistic desires.

The T3 opening scene features helicopter footage of desert racing legend Johnny Campbell pinned wide open on a Honda XR 650 on a dry lake bed. This dynamic footage set the stage for the balance of the T3 video which includes 1996 Supercross footage of McGrath’s near perfect season a road trip that captures an initial look at Mike Metzger free riding Jeff Emig’s outdoor title and the 1996 MXON event in Spain.
