Cho continues his imagistic exploration of the psyche of the solitary individual. Using a combination of meditative static shots and frantic camera movement, he leads the viewer into a realm of extreme isolation, where self-regard and self-observation begin to mutate into a kind of voyeurism. Solitude and silence allow the objects and rituals of daily life — drinking a cup of tea, taking a shower — to take on significance. Lines of text from Karl Krolow's 'Poems Against Death' obliquely comment on this beautiful and reflective assemblage of domestic images.

Raymond Roy is a 64-year-old idealist, an energetic social activist ready to give everything he has to those living on the edge: the alienated, impoverished and exploited members of society. Raymond is also a priest, doing what he has wanted to do ever since he was a teenager. Filmmaker Serge Giguère paints an intimate portrait of a man who has spent 30 years fighting for an alternative vision of life in his community. The film is a blend of cinema vérité and social history that provides a view of the man and his work from without and within, from the poetry of his personal diary laced with doubts and self-criticism, to the many achievements of the community groups he helped. Filming over several years, Giguère gives us a sense of the changes in values and attitudes of those who run our society, along with the role of the community groups who provide solutions, inspiration and a sense of renewal.

Within Heaven and Hell

Swinging between pleasure and torment, Cantor narrates an autobiographical story of a doomed love affair over scenes from The Sound of Music (Robert Wise, 1965) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974). Wittily and ingeniously cutting between parallel sequences from the iconic Hollywood musical and the equally iconic slasher film, Cantor draws out the familial and sexual tensions and terrors underlying both. At one point, in Within Heaven and Hell, Cantor relates a time her lover said to her, “You sound like a movie.” As Cantor would later note, both "The Sound of Music and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are based on true stories.”

Tamako's Tale

Elusive memories flash in the back of his head. Visualising the people and landscapes as they are there, as casually as they are there, should be a difficult task, just as the protagonist struggled with the writing process. However, the film succeeds in vividly depicting the subtle atmosphere felt only in primary schools and only in junior high school, thanks in part to the fine performances of Watanabe Sayaka and her friends, who brilliantly play everyone from primary schools students to preparatory school students. There are no particularly dramatic episodes, but after watching the film, you will feel nostalgic for all the people in the film.
