There was once a wonderful cinema in Seattle Wash called the Pike St. Cinema. It was owned and operated by Dennis Nyback for about 3 1/2 years this cinema played the best films no one else would show. This film is just a little splinter of time captured on film–a very special place in my life that will never be forgotten. I simply documented the cinema as it was including Nick the theater Cat.

End Memory (Impromptu)

About ends and memory, the end of an era. I film to remember: the end of a summer, of a family, a last trip to Vermont before a separation, grandparents getting older.... I film impromptu, dissolving and fading in the camera. At night I hand-develop the film in a beaker. It sticks together and stains, leaving traces and holes that only add to the nostalgia. I leave the film as is, adding only some improvised music, which by its minor harmonies and discordances goes well with the faded, stained pictures.

Curvaceous Corpses

Brace and Kelly, a horror film directing duo who also happen to be lovers, have invited their catty cast of buxom starlets to a secluded mansion for the weekend to film their latest slice and dice masterpiece. The plot of their current production (also entitled "Curvaceous Corpses") revolves around an unknown assailant dispatching his unsuspecting female victims one by one using a gold snake necklace that delivers a deadly dose of curare poison through it's hypodermic fangs. Unfortunately for the ill-fated participants, the lines between reality and fiction become blurred once the bodies begin piling up on the set for real. Are Brace and Kelly hoping to set a new standard for snuff realism by actually executing their cast on video or will their obliviousness to the impending danger lead to their own demise in the ultimate twist ending?

Madame Bovary's Revenge

"In her very first moving image work, Cantor already displays the masterly use of appropriated footage for which she would become known, inserting explicit scenes from the classic porn film Behind the Green Door (1972) into key scenes of lovemaking from Louis Malle's 1959 succès de scandale The Lovers. Taking as its inspiration the (most likely apocryphal) story that actress Jeanne Moreau and her costar were "really making love" on the set of The Lovers, Cantor shows us what director Malle could not, through the addition of hardcore footage from the iconic Marilyn Chambers porn film. At times the edits between one film and the next are remarkably seamless, creating an ingenious illusion, at others Cantor self-consciously foregrounds her redubbing and re-editing of her VHS source material." - Electronic Arts Intermix

'Lying is done with words, and also with silence.' Adrienne Rich. Niamh is home in Ireland with her producer, Helen, looking at locations to film her prize-winning short story. They're staying with her parents which is causing underlying tensions to surface. Her relationship with her twin sister, Marion, is deteriorating while Helen's romantic interest in her is increasing. Everything comes to a head when Niamh decides to break the silence. This is the first known Irish film by a lesbian writer/director to be shot in Ireland by an almost-entirely Irish crew and deals with themes of invisibility, difference and self-expression.

Mountain Far Away

This is a documentary about coal miners. In the Qilian mountains of Qinghai Province, where the altitude is over 3,600 meters and the air thin, there are numerous small coal mines in which work around 200 miners aged 17 to 50. Every day, they must crawl through pits 60 to 70 metres deep just to carry out 30 loads of coal. Each load weighs 50 kilograms. The miners earn 500 yuan a month, without insurance. Miners normally suffer from pneumoconiosis after working four or five years in the mine and cannot work thereafter. They usually spend their wages on building houses, marriage, and tuition fees for their children. If they die in an accident, their family receives a 5,000 yuan pension. This film is a record of these working conditions, and of human labour. (Shot June 1995.)

Queer Son

A compelling portrait of parents coming to terms with their children’s sexual orientation. The parents and children director Vickie Seitchik interviews each come from different social and ethnic backgrounds. Some accepted their children’s orientation easily; others had grief to compound their ordeal from the start. Seitchik skillfully interweaves different interviews to bring out particular personalities while highlighting common traits they all share: the shame, anger, hurt and sense of loss, but also and especially the relief, joy and energy coming out can bring.

The Artists of Yuanmingyuan

In the years before 1995, young artists who pursued free creativity came from all over the country to Yuanmingyuan, in the western suburbs of Beijing. These people settled in the rental houses of the village farmers, and then ambitiously bought paint-stretched canvases to explore and create art. The biggest difficulty they face is to make up for the monthly rent to be paid to the landlord. Selling paintings is not their only means of survival; they would also rely on other crafts to maintain their lives. Their works were very different; they have a spirit of rebellion, and they do not conform to traditional aesthetics. This is what caused Sate officials to intervene. (Shot May–December 1995.)

Guitar Grind

"Guitar Grind" opens abruptly with an overhead shot of Parrino, clad in sunglasses and a T-shirt, as he begins sliding his bass guitar—positioned facedown like a violin bow—against a guitar resting atop its case, causing a somewhat unholy racket. Occasionally reaching up to tweak the amplifier or manipulate the guitar pedal to produce screeching and howling feedback, Parrino uses the instruments unconventionally so that together they project a discordant noise. The artist masterfully draws the listener in to hear repetitions, subtle variations, and musical gestures in the unusual sonic palette. Shot by a lone cameraperson, the visuals of Parrino's performance become increasingly abstract as the music develops into a more familiar and alluring language.
