Within a circle humans exploit animals--predators and victims share the same vital space, for good or for evil. Was the first weapon created to kill, to hunt or for defense? Do we stand innocent or guilty in our treatment of animals? With its brilliant reds and blues exploding within the heartbeat of the circle, now a radar screen, now a target, now a planet, Between Red and Blue explores the dichotomy inherent in life.

Protection Leader

A found footage film made up entirely from super 8 leader, creating a frenetic collage of numbers, text, colours and processing information. Started around 1992, this evolved through many versions and spawned 2 companion films, Chromatic Leader (1996) and Megatherm Leader (2000).

Electrophase

'Electrophase' is a video-graphic expansion of Mark Bain's 'machine environment' installation 'Interphase'. Bain's computer-manipulated images of this mechanical sculpture - which, like the tape, comes across as the creation of a contemporary and lyrical constructivist - are combined with differing, machine-like sounds. The pulsating image is dynamic, and constantly changing in colour and tempo. The sound, which appears to have been injected directly into the electronic, abstracted images, both influences and directs the image, and vice-versa. Ultimately this gives rise to a form of synthesis whereby the seperate elements fuse together into a surprising and alternative single entity, which reaches, and intrigues, our senses as 'Electrophase', a new 'synthetic achine environment'.

Black Hair and Black Eyed

From what sources does a young Korean-American woman draw her sense of identity? From her mother, who provides the kim chee recipe and offers to pick up what she needs from the Price Club? From fashion magazines, or her own short haircut, which brings her the berating of her entire extended family? From the boy she dances with, the girl she sleeps with, or her own barren apartment?

Identity in Isolation

Through a unique combination of visual images the video plays with a certain vision of reality and illusion - histories and culture(s) and the ambiguities of a cultural or a national identity. The artist combines the work created - video and computer techno-applications to explore her aesthetics ... Each set of geographical, political and sociological circumstances prescribe different labels. We come to believe in labels and to limit ourselves within the parameter of that imposed identity. We have to struggle to mediate between what we know to be the self and the outward deluge of imposed descriptors.

Sight Unseen

This encounter with Bali initially focuses on a Balinese Hindu priest and then interrogates and interrelates tourism, anthropology, home-video making and ice-cream selling. One of the priest's sons is an avid cockfighter, the other is a freelance video-shooter. The latter's efforts to document his community serve as a constant reference point for the visiting American cameraman, who is glimpsed in occasional TV monitors, as through local eyes. In the process, suspicions are raised about ethnographic authority and the foundations of cross-cultural knowledge.

[Overview Courtesy of Lux Online] In French this is called a 'Youyou', a sound made by women mainly to celebrates happy occasions but also was used during the Algerian war of liberation by women as a weapon against French soldiers. Issues of body representation are here explored by using a part of the body.

City of Dreams

"City of Dreams" is the story of Marcel "Bambi" Commanda, an Ojibway man from Rama First Nation. Marcel sits in a prison cell, reciting a passage from his life. The film touches on his marginalization and displacement in the urban environment, the loss of culture, language and traditions, and his attempt to regain what he has lost. A poet, performer, drummer and emerging film and video maker, Marcel passed away in 1994 just after filming was finished.

I Want the Sun

Sho Watanabe, 77, has worked as a lighting technician for many years, longing to work in the film industry. However, when his wife, Tomiko, suddenly developed Alzheimer's disease, he took a video and 16mm camera and began documenting her and the people around her. This film is the result of compiling and editing the vast amount of film he had accumulated in this way.

Far Far Away

With her green bow in her hair, a naïve Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz embodies an aspect of the artist’s own personal context. She is dreaming about going beyond the confines of her urban surroundings, amongst thousands of flickering windows in apartment blocks, to travel somewhere over the rainbow. As she stumbles upon her yellow brick road, a bedside telephone, her communications take her far far away, becoming entangled in her obsession with connecting to this far away place. Swept into a cyclone of dizzying imagery, she becomes somewhat more realized, sceptical about who she is and her dreams. Much like the ubiquity of television, her dreams are nothing more than commodified imagination that has nonetheless shaped her life. In this fairy-tale land, she desperately tries to find her way back home.

Produced with the assistance of the Tyne and Wear Archive Service and using rare film footage from its splendid collection, this production presents a unique insight into the changing face of the city during the 20th Century.

A Tragedy Ahead

In 1994, the Hong Kong government suddenly launched an initiative to tear down "rooftop dwellings", even though it had actually accepted their existance for many years. The Housing Authority regarded them as private property and denied owners the opportunity to apply for public housing. Now the government has ordered these 40,000 dwellings to be removed, without offering fair resettlement terms for the residents who had moved in after 1982. Video Power recorded the negotiations before some of these houses were torn down in Mongkok.

Still Life with Small Cup

A radical reworking of an etching by the Italian artist Giorgio Morandi, brought to life by engraving frame by frame directly into the photographic emulsion of colour filmstock. The viewer is taken on a journey through the etching, accompanied by the sounds that the artist might have heard from his window as he worked. Scratched onto 8 perf 35mm colour filmstock and printed as negative.

A Prayer for Nettie

A Prayer For Nettie dramatizes the death of an elderly woman who was Cumming’s photographic model from 1982 to 1993, presenting an improvised series of prayers and memorials for Nettie Harris by people who knew her, and some who did not. In its ambiguous mix of tenderness and aggression, A Prayer For Nettie extends the traditions of the grotesque and the absurd. The fervent prayers of the actors are undermined by indifference, forgetfulness, and the presence of the camera. In the end, comedy turns the tables on piety and remembrance as Nettie looks up from the grave.
