My Father the Guest Worker

The Kurdish director Yüksel Yavuz tells in an autobiographical documentary about the life of his father, who worked as a so-called guest worker at a Hamburg shipyard from 1968 to 1984. Never really at home, he only knew the way to work, the fish market and the coffee house. Yavuz succeeds in creating a touching contemporary document in which he traces the personal life story of his father and connects it with a piece of the social history of the FRG.

The Greeting

Inspired by a painting of the Visitation (1528-29) by the Italian artist Pontormo, The Greeting is a video image sequence involving the interactions between three women that is projected onto a screen mounted to the wall of a dark room. In an industrial urban landscape, two women are engaged in conversation when they are interrupted by the arrival of a third woman. The new woman greets the older of the two, apparently her friend, while ignoring the other. She then whispers an urgent message in her friend's ear, further isolating the other woman. With an underlying awkwardness, introductions are made and pleasantries exchanged between the three.

The birth

An anonymous couple comes to the maternity ward. The woman is immobilized in the bed, the man is in the waiting room. Doctors and nurses decide to have a drunken party. A mysterious guest will help Benio come into the world. An animated joke by Marek Serafinski, a creator and producer of animated films, graphic artist and content creator. From the very beginning, the artist used a combined technique, manipulating shots and graphics. Chronicle pictures of life of the 1980s and 1990s were diversified by including fantastic characters and phenomena. "The Birth" is a grotesque view of the reality of hospital births, the separation of fathers, the isolation of women, and alcohol consumption during working hours.

No Sell Out

No Sell Out employs desktop video to position images of Malcolm X in tension with commercial culture. It is a result of a series of loaded questions we ask ourselves, and now wish to impose on viewers. Mr. X is the serialized signifier that sparks problematic readings and profits in rap music, “political art,” and fashionable sportswear. Is X the sign of a meaningful difference, or just another hip style thang? Appropriating an MTV-like format to critique and question the capitalist commodification of Malcolm X’s subversive politics, X-PRZ sets computer-manipulated imagery of Malcolm X against advertising logos, archival footage, TV imagery, and a propulsive soundtrack of rock music by R.E.M. and Nine Inch Nails. – Tony Cokes

The protagonist, Wakaizumi, makes films with his university friends, but despite being a director, he has no credibility at all due to his selfish and unprincipled nature. He has no finished films. All they have are rumours that he is a strong fighter and that he has eaten cockroaches. Wakaizumi says he wants reality in his films, but he does not know what reality is. Days seem to be unchanging. But as much as something about him hurts people, something about him attracts them, and the filmmaking continues. The well-crafted double structure in terms of composition, direction and camerawork goes beyond the framework of a self-proclaimed 'personal history film' and gives us the best of both worlds: fiction and non-fiction.

Manatsu

I want to help, I want to be saved, I want to help. One day during summer holiday, best friends Nemoto and Maruyama are walking along a mountain path when suddenly a gunshot rings out and Nemoto falls. Maruyama barely manages to hide behind a roadside block, but Nemoto is seriously injured and unable to move. At first Maruyama tries to help, but the persistent and invisible killer frightens him and he is unable to do anything about it. Root begins to blame him, and says that the killer is after you and that he is involved. Time ticks by as the truth remains elusive... The film depicts the human psyche, where friendship and conscience disappear and only egoism emerges as a result of the absurd horror, set only on an ordinary country road. A film that tackles drama head-on, in a world where many films are bland.
