Tripping with Zhirinovsky

A candid, fly-on-the-wall BBC television documentary portrait of Russian Nationalist politician, Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The film shows the leader on a cruise surrounded by two hundred supporters getting plenty of media attention in New York. We are left with the nagging question: to what extent is Zhirinovsky really dangerous? To take that further, to what extent are populist politicians truly dangerous?

With his hand-held video camera, Jalal Toufic presents faces of ordinary people living in a war-ravaged country. He begins with a 1987 US state department document invalidating US passports for travel to Lebanon. Then, we see walls marked by bullet holes, film students listening to a lecture and practicing scenes in a restaurant. Next, the camera visits a mental hospital in Fanar and an older man, holding his Koran, laments being a refugee within his own country. The camera then enters a nursery school. The colors of poetry are red and green; the cost of being Lebanese is to orphan one's children in order then to adopt them.

Harriet gets caught in the toilet with her hands full while the school Nurse sets to treating one of the injured players with an unusual set of implements from the first aid cabinet. Finally a film that's trying to be sexy without taking itself too seriously.

In a blasted, post-apocalyptic landscape, a priapic alien voyeur writhes in a demented frenzy. Two women grapple in a slime-ridden dungeon. To the throb of a grungy, techno soundtrack the film builds to climax; the image disintegrates in a welter of scratches. This stunning and original film is an attempt to evoke modern myths of abduction and abuse by extra-terrestrials, lulling the audience into the trance-like state between sleep and consciousness. The startling images were filmed on black-and-white Super 8, hand-processed and luridly dyed. This is true alchemical erotica.
