New York Long Distance

A film about my relationship to New York since 1962. It deals with the distance between a memory and the image of this memory, a distance one always tries to abolish. In this personal film we see the images of a city from a close distance, with autobiographic fragments on the soundtrack. The distance of recollection. The trace of this distance shapes the memory as much as the places, haunted by so many stories, so that our marks will blow up in a crash. A crash leading to a collapse in a vortex of affects.

Kiss The Boys And Make Them Die explores how memory, sexuality, and the self are created and enforced through the family story. The video chronicles how the social act of loving women becomes channeled into narratives of incest, desire for the mother, loss of the father, separation from the family, death and self-destruction. In this work, sexuality, difference and language are paralleled with haunting memories of a childhood ghost that both desires and hates women. Finally, Kiss The Boys And Make Them Die is a story of childhood trauma, and the adult need to exorcise the past and create an independent self.

Through Samuel/Samantha's eyes we discover a segment of the Latin American community in Toronto. S/he talks about the challenges that Latin gay men face within their own community and the gay community at large.

A short experimental film, “Discrete Moments” offers some paradoxical thoughts on the mathematics of “forever and ever.” While a big jet plane crawls across the tarmac, a love held back, goes unnoticed. “Discrete Moments” was produced for the 1994 Cineworks omnibus film Breaking Up in 3 Minutes. Six Vancouver filmmakers were each given 200 feet of film, restricted to one day of shooting, three edits, one track of sound, and asked to make a three minute film about the break-up of a personal relationship.
