A city of power plants the illuminate department stores offering the fruits of the labour of its workers and peasants. Everybody spends their free time in sports palaces with synchronized swimming and white doves, or in the palace of cultures, where young pioneers play the accordion. Old men and women go on walks and young lovers rent boats by the river, above which arches a rainbow, a symbol of happiness and contentment.

Cannot Exist

The hand-painting of this film is interrupted by, and interspersed with, a geometrically structured Mask of Death (one of those frightening human idea-shapes of dying) immediately caught-up in threads of streaming, polarized crystals of Light (elaborately step-printed, with simultaneous frame-to-frame dissolves and printer "pull-backs" creating an effect as if the room in which the film is being viewed was inhaling viscous strands of Life's chemical material). The blurred photo-image of a person appears briefly superimposed on these "streamings": then there is a short visual "exhale" of this "crystallized" light, as the screen appears to re-absorb its imagery and resolve itself into a pale violet scattering of dust, is it? ... a nebulae, perhaps – i. e., some semblance both earthly and cosmic and (as such) as enigmatic as "the face of God." Featuring images created by recording the movements of a tiny light source with extremely long exposure times, so it draws traces on the photographic emulsion. The light is part of a simple mechanical system that exhibits chaotic behaviour.

Once again, this Armenian Canadian filmmaker proves that she is the world’s best alchemist of handmade abstract film, this time taking on the aesthetic of her contemporaries, Mike and Doug Starn. A natural homage and collabora­tion, in that Torossian's own darkroom tech­niques of decaying and obliterating the surface of film echo the Starns’ approach to photogra­phy in deterioration. Drowning In Flames is a spectacularly mesmerising non-stop express train of images from art history books mutilat­ed into submission. No computer could create the kind of organic textures that seem to peel off the screen, and the effect is akin to an ancient manuscript crumbling in your hands as you turn the page.

Their food, water and supplements are delivered mechanically, their eggs gathered by conveyor belt. With no instinct left in this sterile environment, the poor stressed-out birds are led through their paces by an inspirational video of a model hen. Then, one day, a technologist accidentally slips in the wrong cassette and the monitor shows a good mother hen surrounded by her happy brood. Realizing they have been duped and exploited, the whole hen house rises up in revolt. But it's not that easy to escape the system, and soon the hens end up served to customers in a fast-food restaurant. When food is manufactured with the sole goal of maximizing profits, how does it affect those who consume it? This animated short contains a surprising answer. An animated film without words.
