Michiko, a high school student with no friends and no family to talk to, often goes to the riverbank by herself. There, she meets her childhood friend Yukio, who dropped out of high school to work at a factory, two bad kids, an old man who fishes for fish in the river, which are said to kill you if you eat them, and an old woman who keeps chanting "Nan mai dabu" to the river. One day, Ochan is nowhere to be seen and the bad kids tell Michiko that he died after eating the fish he caught. The film is distinguished by the characters who do not appear on screen, and by the depth of its direction, which makes us imagine that Michiko and Yukio will eventually become a strange old woman and an old man. The subtly textured black-and-white screen makes the rough but wry dialogue all the more interesting.

Dege Sutra-Printing House

Screened in the New Asian Current section of the 1993 Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. Filmed at the Dege Sutra-Printing House in Dege County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, on the edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Known as the "shining pearl under the snow-capped mountains of Tibet," the Dege Sutra-Printing House (at the time this was shot) contains more than 400 books, 900 volumes, and nearly 270,000 printed documents, spanning Nyingma, Sakya, Bonbu, and Gelug sect classics and various other Tibetan Buddhist texts.

In contrast with the taboos regarding death in Western society, death in the Kingdom of Tonga follows a highly ritualized grieving process. The last journey is accompanied by joyous song, hair cutting, gift giving, changing of the garb, lovingly made mats and tapa and social protocol. This documentary video provides an ethnographic window into the Tongan funeral ceremonies and explains the process through which the people elevate their deceased to the role of ancestor.

While visiting Berlin, Baldino turned on her hotel room's television to find Venice Beach, California. She recorded the television image — a long, steady shot of the beach, surf, and bathers. Later, in California, she played back the unexplained and anonymous footage directly in front of the spot it depicted. She then videotaped the scene: the original broadcast, in ghostly miniature on a hand-held TV, and, in the background, its real-world double.
